Zimbabwe’s Renewable Energy Policy: Gaps in Gender Inclusion

01 Apr 2023  |  www.diplomat.co.zw
The article discusses the concerns raised by human rights activists regarding the exclusion and inconsistencies in Zimbabwe's energy policies, particularly in terms of women's participation and inclusion. Despite the existence of policies like the National Energy Policy and Renewable Energy Policy, gaps remain in gender responsiveness and actualizing objectives for equitable access to renewable energy. Pamela Mhlanga of the Zimbabwe Women’s Resource Centre and Network highlights the policy's limitations in recognizing the diverse roles and needs of women and girls. A 2017 assessment by the same organization found that gender mainstreaming in the policy lacks clear goals and strategies. The technical nature of the policy and energy projects also contributes to their inaccessibility and the marginalization of women's concerns. Hivos Southern Africa and the United Nations emphasize the importance of renewable energy in addressing gender disparities and the need for inclusive energy systems that consider women's voices and participation.

The Coal Curse of Hwange, Zimbabwe

01 Apr 2023  |  Medium
The article discusses the dire situation in Hwange, Zimbabwe, where coal mining has led to environmental and health hazards. Simba Mulezu, a young boy, suffered severe burns and deformities after falling into an underground hot coal pit. His mother, Susan Mulezu, struggles to provide for her family amidst these dangers. The Centre for Natural Resources Governance, represented by Farai Muguu, criticizes Hwange Colliery for not controlling the underground fires and demands compensation for victims. The article highlights the broader issues of chronic health problems, unemployment, and poverty in the region, exacerbated by the coal industry. It calls for the implementation of clean coal technology and better social support systems to protect vulnerable communities and achieve Sustainable Development Goal 7, which aims for universal access to clean and affordable energy.
