Haiti/Ile-a-Vache: The very real social damage of corruption

15 Jul 2023  |  www.alterpresse.org
In 2013, the Haitian government targeted Ile-a-Vache for a major post-earthquake tourism program, with investments over $200 million. The project turned into a nightmare, with vast sums spent and few completed projects. Seven years later, the island faces severe drought, and the population is poorer than ever. Residents have been dispossessed of land and resources, with insufficient or no compensation, and human rights violations have been reported. The fishing industry has declined due to unfulfilled promises and political favoritism. The project, part of a neoliberal strategy by the Martelly/Lamothe administration, has been criticized for its lack of inclusion of local populations and for being mired in corruption, with international companies involved in the mismanagement of funds. The situation on the island has not improved, with hotels closing due to a lack of tourism, and the island's population continues to suffer as corruption remains a major issue.

A new generation of science journalists in Haiti

14 Jul 2023  |  International Journalists' Network
Haiti's media landscape, historically dominated by political and literary news, lacks specialized scientific press. Attempts to develop science journalism, such as the 2014 initiative by journalists and university professors, have faced numerous challenges. Despite these obstacles, individuals like Marc-Donald Vincent and Kareen Seignon are making strides in promoting scientific knowledge through platforms like Le Scientifique and TIkalab. The need for a robust science journalism sector is recognized, but the catalyst for this transformation remains to be seen.

Cet écrit de vulgarisation scientifique fait une recension chronologique des travaux académiques et essais cités réalisés sur le crooner haïtien, Jean Gesner Henry dit Coupé Cloué.

Why We Wrote This

01 Feb 2023  |  The Christian Science Monitor
The article discusses the role of theater as a form of cultural and political resistance in Haiti, particularly in the context of the current climate of insecurity and gang violence in Port-au-Prince. Despite the risks posed by criminal gangs, which have increased since the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse in 2021, Haitians are attending theater performances as an act of defiance. The Yanvalou Café, the center of Haiti's theater scene, is hosting the 19th annual Quatre Chemins theater festival. The article highlights the history of theater in Haiti as a tool for political resistance, dating back to the times of the Duvalier dictatorship. It also touches on the challenges faced by the theater community, including funding issues and the need for security measures. The piece underscores the importance of art in maintaining Haitian identity and resistance in the face of political and economic turmoil.
