Younes Banan, director of the Institute for Social and Media Studies, stated that the demographic, human, and economic characteristics of Casablanca have played a significant role in the spread of COVID-19 and the difficulty in controlling it. Casablanca's population density, poverty, and informal commercial gatherings without proper health and safety measures contribute to the virus's spread. Industrial units in the city, which is also an economic and industrial hub, have been fertile grounds for the virus, recording high infection numbers despite punitive measures against some units for not respecting preventive measures. Banan emphasizes the need for rapid, city-specific studies considering Casablanca's unique characteristics and for decisions to be made with the city's population activity, movements, and directions in mind, along with civil society's role in raising awareness.
