Puntland, located in northeastern Somalia, has a rich history from its ancient trade roots as the Land of Punt to its current status as an autonomous state. The region was historically significant as the Sultanate of Majeerteen, a major trading power, before becoming part of Italian Somaliland in the late 19th century. In 1998, Puntland declared autonomy to avoid the clan warfare affecting southern Somalia. The region gained international attention due to piracy issues from 2005 to 2012. In 2024, Puntland announced its intention to operate as a functionally independent state, led by Said Abdullahi Dani, who was re-elected as president. Today, Puntland remains a crucial player in the Horn of Africa, with Garowe as its administrative center and Bosaso as its commercial hub.
