Chenggang Xu is a political economist. He is a Senior Research Scholar at the Stanford Center on China’s Economy and Institutions and a Board Member of the Ronald Coase Institute. Before retiring from the University of Hong Kong, he was the Chung Hon-Dak Professor of Economics there, a Special-Term Read moreProfessor at Tsinghua University, and a World-Class University Professor at Seoul National University. He served as the president of Asian Law and Economics and also as a consultant for the World Bank and the IMF. He has frequently appeared in the media to analyze or comment on China’s political economy.
His paper 'The Fundamental Institutions of China's Reforms and Development' published in the Journal of Economic Literature in 2011 is one of the most cited papers about the Chinese political economy.
His forthcoming book will soon be published by Cambridge University Press, Institutional Genes: The Origins of China’s Institutions and Totalitarianism.
