The British government will check the visas of Russian investors

05 Oct 2020  |  www.kommersant.uk
The UK government, led by Prime Minister Theresa May, is set to re-examine visas issued to foreign investors to ensure transparency and legality of the funds invested in the UK economy. This follows diplomatic tensions between the UK and Russia. Home Secretary Amber Rudd has been asked to review around 700 Russian Tier 1 investor visas, which require a minimum investment of £50,000. The rules for issuing these visas were tightened in 2015-2016, leading to an 84% reduction in such visas. Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson has also spoken about developing economic measures against wealthy Russians with assets in the UK. Immigration lawyers from Astons commented on the stringent criteria for investor and entrepreneur visas and advised concerned investors to consult immigration lawyers.

Philip Ammerman Interview

01 Sep 2020  |  Premiere Media
The article is an interview with an angel investor discussing the nature of angel investments, the risks involved, and the sectors he is involved in within Cyprus. Angel investments are small investments in early-stage startups, which are considered risky, hence the high equity shares taken by investors. The investor, Philip, also provides mentorship and connections to the startups he invests in. He mentions that there is no general rule for profitability and risk in startups, as it depends on the niche and market saturation. The discussion also covers the impact of COVID-19 on the economy, with a focus on Cyprus. The investor criticizes the Cypriot government's handling of economic support and subsidies, suggesting that the system should be fast, online, and immediate. He also discusses the tourism sector, which is significant for Cyprus's GDP, and the challenges it faces due to the pandemic. The interview concludes with skepticism about the government's plans to subsidize local holidays and the viability of charter flights for tourists from low-risk countries.

Despite the risks, the author compares the perceived danger in Lebanon to that in European cities that have experienced terrorism, suggesting a philosophical acceptance of the inherent risks of travel.

Feeling the squeeze: Many in Cyprus took to the streets to protest as banks closed for two weeks and investors took a ‘haircut’ on their savings.

29 Apr 2013  |  Russia Beyond
The article discusses the severe impact of the Cypriot financial crisis on Russian expatriates and small business owners living in Cyprus. Following a $13 billion bailout agreement, which included the closure of Laiki Bank and a levy on uninsured deposits, many Russian entrepreneurs have faced significant financial losses. The article highlights personal accounts from various Russian business owners who have been affected by the crisis, including a food distribution network owner and a shopkeeper. The EU's decision to impose a 'haircut' on deposits has been criticized by Russian officials, with President Vladimir Putin and Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev expressing their views on the matter. The crisis has led to a loss of trust in Cypriot banks, with businesses considering moving their funds to non-EU jurisdictions. The Russian government has called for the protection of Russian banks in Cyprus and is looking to restructure a loan to the island nation. The long-term effects of the crisis on the EU's economy are yet to be fully understood.
