MDCN assessment test: Controversies over failure rate of foreign trained doctors

14 Oct 2023  |  dailypost.ng
A significant number of Nigerian foreign-trained doctors failed the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria's assessment test, with only 205 out of over 700 passing. The high failure rate has sparked debate over the quality of medical education abroad versus in Nigeria. Dr. Kenneth Ugwu and others argue that the training system abroad differs, focusing on specialty and modern facilities, while Nigerian education emphasizes breadth of knowledge and resilience in less ideal conditions. The war in Ukraine is also cited as a factor affecting the quality of medical training for Nigerian students there. The Nigeria Medical Association suggests additional training in Nigeria could remedy the deficiencies. The situation has led to calls for more medical schools in Nigeria to meet the country's healthcare needs.

Nigeria’s implementation of Child Rights Act still at zero- Experts

23 Sep 2023  |  dailypost.ng
Child protection experts have rated Nigeria's implementation of the Child Rights Act as poor, highlighting the country's cultural and religious diversity as challenges. Despite the Act's ratification in 2003 and domestication in almost all states, its impact is unclear, with many children still facing severe conditions such as slavery, trafficking, and abuse. Experts like Tunde Aremu from Plan International emphasize the need for structures, investment, and political will to enforce the law. UNICEF's 2022 report revealed about 8,000 Nigerian children were recruited as child soldiers, and the International Labour Organisation recorded 15 million in child labour. With 67.5 million children living in poverty and 10.5 million out of school, the rights of Nigerian children are not prioritized. UNICEF insists the Act's implementation falls below expectations, and Fatima Adamu warns of the grave cost of inaction. Calls are being made to scale up child protection services and fast-track court cases involving children.
