In DRC, humanitarians fall victim to assaults and kidnappings

Humanitarian workers in the Democratic Republic of the Congo have been subjected to kidnappings and assaults, with nearly thirty workers abducted recently. A convoy from the consortium Congo Handicap et Action Communautaire pour le Développement Durable (CH ACDD) was attacked in Fizi, South Kivu, leading to the temporary suspension of their activities in the region. Francine Atosha, the consortium's coordinator, reported that employees were taken hostage, abused, and then released. The local administrator, Samy Kalondji Badibanga, condemned the attacks and promised government action. Atosha calls for concrete security measures to protect humanitarian workers.

Eastern DRC has been shaken by natural disasters recently, with landslides in the Masisi territory of Nord-Kivu causing one death and three injuries at Rubaya, and ten deaths in a new landslide in the village of Miringati, Lubero territory. South Kivu has also been affected by torrential rains and landslides in the villages of Bushushu and Nyamukubi, resulting in casualties including injuries and deaths. Neighboring South Kivu experienced deadly floods last week, resulting in at least 401 deaths, hundreds missing, and significant material damage. Frederic Mufungizi, head of emergency services at Croix-Rouge Sud Kivu, visited the disaster sites.

In South Kivu, DRC, two senior officers were found guilty of rape of a minor and dismissed from the army, with Colonel Didier Ngadja and Major Zangilo Noe Nawej each sentenced to seven years in prison. A captain was acquitted in another rape case. A total of 19 military and police defendants were judged in public hearings, with 17 on appeal for rape and murder cases. The Military Court of South Kivu delivered the verdicts, which were attended by the local population and facilitated by the Social Fund of the Republic and the Panzi Foundation. While some were satisfied with the convictions, concerns were raised about the lack of mechanisms to recover damages awarded to victims. The lawyer for ex-Colonel Ngadja plans to appeal the verdict.

In Bukavu, South Kivu, a group of seven youths has created 'Briquette du Kivu,' a company that transforms 200 kilos of biodegradable household and other organic waste into ecological briquettes weekly. The initiative, started four months ago, aims to reduce deforestation and improve sanitation. The process involves drying, carbonizing, pressing the raw material, and then sun-drying the briquettes for 5 to 7 days. Gisele Furaha, a local resident, attests to the briquettes' efficiency, noting that just ten are enough to cook a vegetable rice dish for five people.
