At Least 20 Killed in Central Somalia Blasts

03 Oct 2022  |  voanews.com
Three car bombs in Beledweyne, Somalia, killed at least 20 people and wounded 36. The first two targeted a military base and government headquarters, killing the deputy governor of Hiran region and the region's health minister. Al-Shabab claimed responsibility. The attacks followed the Somali government's announcement of the death of al-Shabab co-founder Abdullahi Nadir in a joint operation with international forces. AFRICOM confirmed an airstrike in the area on the same day. Somalia's Defense Minister suggested the strike was retaliation for recent al-Shabab killings, including a police chief and a traditional elder. Turkey is reportedly providing air support to Somali forces against al-Shabab.
