Cycling in African cities to help tame global warming

05 Apr 2023  |  The East African
The article by Mohamed Issa discusses the potential shift from walking to bicycle riding as a primary mode of transportation for low-income earners in African cities. It references a study on non-motorised transport in Kenya and Tanzania, highlighting that while cycling is uncommon in larger cities, it accounts for about 20 percent of all daily trips in smaller ones. Another study emphasizes the environmental benefits of cycling, suggesting that it can help reduce carbon emissions and combat global warming. The latter study indicates that cyclists emit 84 percent less carbon than motorists in various international cities and suggests that switching from car to bicycle can significantly reduce one's carbon footprint. The article suggests that cities should promote 'active travel' to move towards decarbonised transport and achieve zero emissions by eliminating motorised vehicles, particularly private cars.

Tanzania’s President commits to strengthening freedom of speech

03 Apr 2023  |  The East African
Tanzania's President Samia Suluhu Hassan has expressed her government's commitment to enhancing freedom of speech and supporting media development. In a meeting with editors and journalists, she addressed concerns raised by Deodatus Balile, Chairman of the Tanzania Editors Forum, regarding restrictive laws and financial challenges faced by media houses, including advertising restrictions. While President Samia rejected the possibility of a government budget allocation for the media, citing constitutional constraints, she encouraged media outlets to seek private advertisements. She also acknowledged the economic impact of Covid-19 on Tanzania but reassured that the economy is stable. The president's commitment to dialogue and improving the media environment was emphasized, although issues with the ban on media houses remain unresolved.

Tanzania opens grain centres in DR Congo, South Sudan

30 Mar 2023  |  The East African
Tanzania has launched grain storage facilities in Lubumbashi, DR Congo, and Juba, South Sudan, to promote the sale of surplus food crops. The Agriculture Minister, Hussein Bashe, announced on social media that Tanzania is also planning to open another facility in Mombasa, Kenya. While the Agriculture ministry will not be directly involved in selling the grain, it will act as an initiator to help Tanzanian farmers and traders find better markets. The country has already delivered 800 tonnes of grains to the new centres. Additionally, Tanzania has initiated the Southern Agricultural Growth Corridor of Tanzania (SAGCOT) to boost food production using 350,000 hectares in the southern highlands for various crops. In 2019, Tanzania exported 97,000 tonnes of maize.
