Investing in Adolescents is Betting on Development: UNICEF

30 Nov 2011  |  cimacnoticias.com.mx
UNICEF has urged countries worldwide to increase their budget for adolescent development, highlighting that this contributes to future equity. The report 'Adolescence: An Age of Opportunity' notes there were 1.2 billion adolescents in 2009, making up 18% of the global population, with 19% in Latin America. Investment in adolescents is seen as crucial to address inequities and improve conditions for future generations. Mexico, for example, invests only 25% of its budget in education and 5% in health. The report emphasizes the importance of focusing on adolescent girls, who can significantly impact their communities and future generations. María Eitel of the Nike Foundation contributed to the report, emphasizing the economic and social benefits of investing in girls' education and health.

Promajoven Attends to Only 4.2 Percent of Adolescent Mothers

30 Nov 2011  |  cimacnoticias.com.mx
The Promajoven program, managed by Mexico's Secretaría de Educación Pública (SEP), only served 4.2 percent of its target population of adolescent mothers and pregnant adolescents in 2009, according to the National Council for the Evaluation of Social Development Policy (Coneval). Despite a significant budget increase over the years, the program's scholarship amount has not been raised since its inception. Researchers Adriana Medina Espino and Leticia Calvario Martínez from the Center for the Advancement of Women and Gender Equity (CEAMEG) highlighted that the number of adolescent mothers has nearly quadrupled, while child and adolescent rights specialists have criticized Promajoven as a palliative policy that fails to ensure basic education or adequate medical care.
