Banks are to manage sustainability risks, and what if they don’t?

03 Nov 2021  |  bworldonline.com
The Philippines is actively engaging in sustainable finance initiatives, highlighted by the recent launch of a sustainable finance roadmap and a directive from Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas for banks to manage environmental and social risks. The country has committed to a significant reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030, and policies are being shaped to support renewable energy, resilient agriculture, and greener transport systems. However, the economic pressures of the pandemic and the need for energy security present challenges to the transition away from carbon-intensive sources. The article discusses the complexities of aligning financial practices with sustainability goals in the face of economic and policy constraints.

Rethinking financial stability in a crisis: Spend when you can, save when you must

27 Sep 2021  |  bworldonline.com
Daniela 'Danie' Luz Laurel reflects on redefining financial stability amid crises, building on insights from a BusinessWorld panel with financial advisors. Traditional financial literacy rules seem less applicable in the current climate, with active incomes unreliable and passive incomes hard to grow. The pandemic has led to increased savings but lower absolute amounts, and investments are not keeping pace with inflation. Laurel suggests a cyclical approach to financial health, spending in times of plenty and saving in times of scarcity, to contribute to the economy and others' needs.
