Revisiting 1492: Uncovering the True History of the New World

01 Apr 2023  |  barbadostoday.bb
Alessandro Giustolisi discusses the significant historical events of 1492, including the expulsion of the Moors from Granada, the Alhambra Decree, the end of the Middle Ages, and Columbus's discovery of the New World. He critiques the traditional narrative of these events, suggesting that Europeans may have visited the Caribbean before 1492. Giustolisi argues that the discovery of the Americas led to the spread of diseases, decimation of indigenous populations, and the establishment of the slavery system. He also touches on the role of the Church and European monarchs in colonization and trade, and the potential for earlier discoveries by Vikings and possibly Chinese explorers. Giustolisi, a former travel industry executive, emphasizes the importance of understanding true historical events and their impact on heritage and tourism. The editor notes that some of Giustolisi's claims, such as pre-Columbian contact by Phoenicians, Vikings, and Africans, are debated among historians and are subjects of ongoing research.
