Student risks life at the front

26 Oct 2023  |  www.universitas.no
In Ukraine, students like Derduga Vadi and Daryna Smolnikova have transitioned from civilian life to serving as combat medics at the front lines. Vadi, formerly a construction worker, now provides first aid in the trenches, while Smolnikova, who put her biology studies on hold, works at stabilization points near the front to treat injured soldiers. Despite the constant threat from Russian missiles and drones, and the personal toll of seeing friends hurt or killed, they remain dedicated to their roles. Hospitals like the one where 'Dog' works are targeted by Russian forces, making them unsafe despite protections under the Geneva Convention. The article highlights the personal sacrifices and risks faced by medical personnel in war zones.

Death and Mourning in Nablus

19 Sep 2023  |  www.universitas.no
In Nablus, a city on the occupied West Bank, funerals for Palestinians killed by Israeli military forces are a grim routine. Mohammed Abd al-Hakim Nada, 24, was shot and killed by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), and his death has sparked sorrow and anger among the local population. The IDF has been accused of labeling victims as terrorists without clear evidence. The region is tense, with children often engaging in stone-throwing at IDF soldiers. Badr al-Masri, 19, was another casualty, aspiring to be a chef before being killed near a religious site. The Israeli security barrier and checkpoints have made it difficult for Palestinians like al-Masri to visit holy sites such as Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem. The high number of Palestinian and Israeli deaths this year has been the most since 2005, with over 200 Palestinians and over 30 Israelis killed as of August 21. The lack of clarity and communication from Israeli authorities regarding these incidents adds to the Palestinians' sense of insecurity and confusion.

I have been abused by many people

19 Aug 2023  |  www.universitas.no
In southern Iraq, Ahmed and Zahra, who are part of the LGBTQ+ community and remain anonymous due to safety concerns, share their experiences of abuse and homophobia. Zahra, a student and digital artist, uses her art to challenge negative representations of the queer community, drawing inspiration from drag queens and lesbian relationships. Ahmed, who knew he was queer from a young age, faced pressure to 'pray the gay away' but now finds support in the queer community. The contrast between the acceptance of LGBTQ+ rights in countries like Norway and the hostility in Iraq is stark, highlighted by protests where rainbow flags were burned in Baghdad. The future for LGBTQ+ individuals in Iraq is uncertain, with potential new laws that could criminalize homosexuality with the death penalty. Ahmed and Zahra hope for a study scholarship to leave Iraq for Europe or the USA.
