Then, in 2016, I won a scholarship for my research project from International Journalism Program Objective, which was about the families whose houses were destroyed due to ditch conflicts experienced in Turkey's southeastern province and were forced to migrate to Istanbul. In the scope of this research, I conducted interviews with 9 families in Sur-Diyarbarkır, Şırnak and Cizre, Nusaybin and Yüksekova. I continue to work on my book which consists all of these interviews. This project was published in the title of "New residents of Istanbul from Cizre to Yüksekova". Lastly, between September 2018 and February 2019, I worked as a research assistant in the project supported by TUBITAK and which was executed by Professor Dr. Fuat Keyman, academic member of Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences Faculty at Sabancı University, name of which was '' Making the Peace Process Permanent: Socialization in the Post-Conflict Construction Process ".

What do TUIK's waste statistics say? Are the ashes of thermal power plants harmless?

13 Jan 2022  |  Yeşil Gazete
Turkey's Statistical Institute (TUIK) released the 2020 statistics for waste from thermal power plants, revealing a total of 104.8 million tons of waste, with 30.9 million tons classified as hazardous. The report shows an increase of 10.5% in total waste since 2018, with thermal power plants producing 24.4 million tons of waste, 79.5% of which was non-hazardous ash and slag. Associate Professor Sedat Gündoğdu from Çukurova University critiques the data, suggesting the decrease in waste from thermal power plants could be due to periods of non-operation due to energy surplus and price imbalances. He also questions the classification of ash as non-hazardous, the safety of waste disposal methods, and the consistency of the data, especially in light of increased household waste during the pandemic.

Forest areas in four more provinces have been excluded from the forest boundary: Tens of thousands of hectares could be destroyed

07 Jan 2022  |  Yeşil Gazete
New presidential decrees published in the Official Gazette have removed 376,494 m2 of forest areas in Mersin and Ankara from the forest boundary. This follows a similar action in Kastamonu and Manisa, bringing the total area removed to 988,342 m2. Since the enactment of an additional article to a law on April 28, 2018, 6,843,788 m2 of forest land has been excluded from forest status, equivalent to 684 hectares. Experts and opposition politicians criticize these decisions, fearing they will lead to significant deforestation and ecological imbalance, and accuse the government of prioritizing profit over environmental conservation.

Istanbul's Historic Greek Orphanage to be Salvaged

05 Oct 2021  |  www.al-monitor.com
The historical Greek orphanage in Istanbul, known as Europe's largest timber building, is undergoing preliminary restoration efforts. The building, which has been unused for decades and is nearly in ruins, is being attended to by the Istanbul municipality in coordination with the Ecumenical Patriarchate, the site's owner. Earlier in the year, a construction company associated with the municipality created a visual image of the structure to assess its current condition and damages, which will aid in the restoration planning. However, experts are concerned that the restoration efforts are not yet sufficient to ensure the building's preservation.

Mahçupyan: There is a secret backlash against Erdoğan, Ağırdır: AK Party has lost one in four voters

16 May 2019  |  euronews
Following Turkey's transition to a new presidential government system, the March 31, 2019, local elections revealed a different political landscape in major cities, with the opposition CHP's candidates winning in Istanbul and Ankara, cities long governed by the ruling AK Party. The AK Party, allied with the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP), not only lost key cities but also faced challenges, including rumors of new party formations by former members Ali Babacan, Ahmet Davutoğlu, and Abdullah Gül. Bekir Ağırdır of KONDA and writer Etyen Mahçupyan, a former advisor to Davutoğlu, discussed the AK Party's loss of one in four voters, internal dissatisfaction with President Erdoğan, and the potential impact of new parties. They also analyzed voter behavior, with Ağırdır noting that the AK Party and MHP voters did not switch to Ekrem İmamoğlu, but rather abstained, affecting the election outcome. Mahçupyan pointed to the AK Party's internal issues beginning in early 2016, while both commentators were skeptical about the success of any new party and criticized the idea of opportunism among potential founders.

Ertuğrul Günay: The process may evolve into an early election debate

13 May 2019  |  euronews
Former Minister of Culture and Tourism Ertuğrul Günay discussed the potential for early elections following the controversial cancellation of the Istanbul mayoral election by the Supreme Election Council (YSK). He criticized the Justice and Development Party (AK Parti) for its authoritarian tendencies and suggested that the emergence of new parties could accelerate the AK Parti's loss of power. Günay praised Ekrem İmamoğlu as a unifying figure representing democratic hope. He also mentioned the possibility of former AK Parti figures like Ahmet Davutoğlu, Ali Babacan, and Abdullah Gül forming new political movements. Günay expressed skepticism towards a new peace process involving Abdullah Öcalan, emphasizing the need for a democratic resolution to the Kurdish issue.

From Cizre to Yüksekova: Istanbul's new residents: You're Kurdish, we can't give you a house!

05 Mar 2017  |  Demokrat Haber - Bağımsız, Alternatif, Özgür Haberler
Following the curfews and conflicts that began in Southeast Turkey in 2015, many Kurds, like in the 1990s, were forced to migrate. Although there is no exact number, estimates suggest that between 300,000 to 600,000 people have been displaced, a number that may rise. The media has normalized the reporting of deaths and curfews, while the stories of those affected by the destruction of homes and lives have been overlooked. Istanbul, a city of hope for employment and a better life, has become a destination for many displaced Kurds. However, they face discrimination in finding homes and jobs, with many landlords and employers rejecting them upon learning of their Kurdish identity. The Acar family from Cizre, now living in Istanbul, shares their story of discrimination and struggle to find housing and work. The article also recounts the harrowing experiences of Kurds during the curfews in Cizre, drawing parallels to the devastation in Kobane and highlighting the human cost of the conflict.
