Hollywood's 'digital wall' against diversity

04 Apr 2024  |  cnn.com
Felix Sanchez criticizes the lack of diversity in Hollywood, particularly in the 2016 Oscar nominations, highlighting the underrepresentation of Latinos, Asians, blacks, and other minorities. Despite Latinos' significant contribution to box office sales, they are rarely cast in lead roles. Sanchez points out that only a few Hispanics have won Oscars in the award's history. He identifies three main issues: an outdated black/white paradigm of diversity, the Academy's membership determination process, and the role of studios and agents in perpetuating the lack of diversity. He cites studies showing the low percentage of Latino leads and the economic power of the Hispanic community, arguing that Hollywood has built a 'digital wall' that excludes Latinos, despite their substantial investment in the industry.

Sanchez also mentions the contributions of Latino actors in various TV series and the evolution of Spanish-language content on networks like Univision and Telemundo. He highlights the unity among Latinos in rejecting Trump's rhetoric and warns of the political consequences for institutions that continue to associate with him. Sanchez also references the National Hispanic Leadership Agenda's request for NBC to sever ties with Trump. The article emphasizes the potential impact of the Latino community's response through media engagement and voting power.

Call it 'Latino Spring'

04 Apr 2024  |  cnn.com
Felix Sanchez discusses the backlash against Donald Trump's anti-Mexican remarks, highlighting the collective action of Latinos through social media, which led to significant corporate responses. Univision, NBC, and Televisa severed ties with Trump, and Macy's dropped his merchandise after a petition on MoveOn.org gained 700,000 signatures. Latino celebrities and artists publicly denounced Trump, and Latino organizations mobilized online. The article criticizes the tepid responses from presidential candidates like Jeb Bush and the support from Ted Cruz, contrasting them with the strong stance taken by Univision. Sanchez warns that presidential campaigns are at risk of alienating Latino voters if they fail to understand and engage with the Latino community's reaction to such incidents.

Trump's trip to Mexico: A missed opportunity?

04 Apr 2024  |  cnn.com
Felix Sanchez comments on Donald Trump's visit to Mexico and his subsequent immigration speech. Trump's meeting with Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto was seen as a strategic move, potentially elevating his presidential stature by standing alongside a world leader. The meeting was praised for its optics, suggesting equality between the US and Mexico. However, Trump's later speech was criticized for its xenophobic tone, undermining the progress made earlier. Sanchez acknowledges Peña Nieto's courage in confronting Trump's negative portrayal of Mexicans and Mexican-Americans. The article also touches on the potential impact of Trump's actions on different Latino voter segments in the US and the broader implications for US-Mexico relations and trade agreements.

Critical Readings: Simón

04 Apr 2024  |  leyendolavidaenpapel.blogspot.com
The article is a review of Miqui Otero's novel 'Simón,' which has garnered significant attention in the literary world despite being from a non-famous author and a modest publishing house. The reviewer, Caronte, approached the book with high expectations and was not disappointed, finding the novel to be intense, tender, painful, fun, and full of life. The narrative follows the life of a boy from Barcelona, touching on themes of childhood, youth, adulthood, loss of innocence, and survival in a challenging world. The book is seen as a bildungsroman that captures the essence of Barcelona and its working-class people. Despite some initial pacing issues, the reviewer praises Otero's unique style and the novel's balance between tradition and freshness.

The study adopts a qualitative descriptive approach using focus groups, semi-structured interviews, and document analysis on a sample of 16 students, three teachers, and a principal from two campuses. It concludes that factors such as dysfunctional households, lack of school transportation, early dating, inappropriate cell phone use, peer influence on psychoactive substance use, and deficiencies in teacher-student mediation impact students' self-regulation and academic performance.

Evaluation of the Presence of Cellular Receptors to Avian Influenza Virus in Oviducts of Birds Subjected to Forced Moulting Using Immunofluorescence

01 Dec 2017  |  engormix.com
A study conducted by researchers from the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México investigated the distribution of avian influenza virus receptors in the oviducts of hens subjected to forced moulting. The study was motivated by a 2012 outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza H7N3 in Mexico, which affected approximately 22 million laying hens. Forced moulting was implemented in quarantined areas to maintain egg production and reduce mortality. The research found that forced moulting decreased the expression of specific receptors in the cell membrane, which determines the host's susceptibility to the influenza virus. Immunofluorescence with Maackia amurensis lectin was used to identify the presence of viral receptors in histological sections of oviducts from hens in production and those undergoing forced moulting. Results showed a strong signal of receptors in hens in production, while the signal was low in hens undergoing moulting, demonstrating a decrease in the number of receptors due to forced moulting. This reduction affects infection and replication of the virus, potentially explaining the observed field survival rates of infected hens subjected to forced moulting.

Latinos go to the movies a lot. But that's not reflected on the big screen

01 Apr 2017  |  cnn.com
Felix Sanchez discusses the disparity between the high moviegoing rates of Latinos in the United States and their underrepresentation in film roles. Despite Latinos being 18% of the US population and over-indexing at 23% of frequent moviegoers, they are the most under-cast demographic in US films. Sanchez highlights the negative consequences of this underrepresentation, including the perpetuation of stereotypes and misinformation. He criticizes the MPAA and the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences for not addressing the issue of Latino portrayal. The article also mentions a significant endowment by George Lucas's family foundation to the University of Southern California Film School to support diversity. Sanchez calls for leadership from film industry organizations to improve minority representation and suggests that a boycott by minority moviegoers could be a potential response to the lack of diversity in films.

Opinion: 'SNL' is wrong to let Donald Trump host

19 Oct 2015  |  cnn.com
Felix Sanchez criticizes NBCUniversal's decision to allow Donald Trump to host 'Saturday Night Live' (SNL), arguing it normalizes his derogatory comments about Latinos. Sanchez points out the inconsistency of NBCUniversal, which previously severed ties with Trump over his remarks, yet now offers him a platform on a popular comedy show. He highlights the lack of Latino representation on SNL, noting that in its 41-year history, the show has cast only two Latino actors and no Latinas. The National Hispanic Leadership Agenda has sent a letter to NBCUniversal executives requesting the cancellation of Trump's SNL appearance. Sanchez calls for Latino viewers to demand better representation and to exercise their influence not just at the ballot box but also in media consumption.

Sanchez recounts the various waves of Latino immigration, from the Spanish empire's expansion to the recent migrations from Central and South America. He suggests that Latinos are not outsiders but have been central to the founding and development of the nation. The visit of King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia of Spain to the U.S. is seen as an opportunity to highlight the shared heritage and counter negative perceptions of Latinos.

Trump doesn't get the new realities of immigration

24 Jul 2015  |  cnn.com
Felix Sanchez criticizes Donald Trump's visit to Laredo, Texas, and his anti-immigrant rhetoric. Sanchez argues that Trump's portrayal of Mexican immigrants as criminals is damaging to the GOP and resonates with a segment of the party, as evidenced by his rise in polls. He compares the situation to past political strategies that scapegoated minorities and suggests that Trump's policies are aimed at reversing demographic changes and maintaining white dominance. Sanchez also notes the disconnect between Trump's proposals, such as building a wall on the southern border, and the reality of border cities like Laredo, which have a majority Mexican-American population. He concludes by expressing a wish that Trump would learn from the transformation of a character in the film 'Giant,' who becomes a defender of Mexican people in Texas.
