Students of Closed Universities Are Anxious

01 Feb 2020  |  p24blog.org
Following the attempted coup in Turkey, 15 foundation universities across 10 different provinces were closed under the state of emergency decree. This affected 56,703 students and 2,808 academics, leaving students without a school and academics jobless. The Council of Higher Education (YÖK) announced that students from these universities would be placed in state universities without suffering any grievances. However, students and their families expressed concerns about discrimination, polarization, and being labeled as terrorists. They are demanding to continue their education in their current campuses through guarantor universities, but YÖK's response has not met their requests. Students are also worried about the suspension of scholarships and loans until they are placed in new institutions. The situation has led to widespread anxiety and uncertainty among the affected students.

A Story of Hope: The Dream House

18 Jan 2020  |  Yeni1Mecra
The Dream House project in Ankara's Altındağ district, Kale neighborhood, has been working for about one and a half years to raise awareness for the social integration of Romani children. The project, a joint initiative by the Çocuk Alanında Çalışan Avukatlar Ağı (ÇAÇAv) and the Roman Hakları Derneği, offers disadvantaged Romani children opportunities to learn photography, write and perform sketches. Despite initial challenges, including gender discrimination and skepticism from families, the project has seen positive changes in children's engagement and aspirations. The project aims to provide social opportunities that families cannot afford and has reached about 50 children in the neighborhood. Betül Esra Akyüz, a volunteer and member of ÇAÇAv, emphasizes the importance of multicultural understanding and overcoming prejudices for successful social integration.

What happened at the Feminist Night March organized in Istanbul?

09 Mar 2019  |  Demokrat Haber - Bağımsız, Alternatif, Özgür Haberler
On International Women's Day, the 17th Feminist Night March organized by the Istanbul Feminist Collective in Istanbul was blocked by police citing 'security' reasons. Police closed Taksim Square and Istiklal Avenue to pedestrian and vehicle traffic before the march. The gathering crowd in Taksim was attacked by police with plastic bullets and tear gas. Despite the police blockade, participants gathered in side streets, chanting slogans and carrying banners. The crowd also showed solidarity with HDP MP Leyla Güven, who has been on a hunger strike. The event ended with the dispersal of the crowd and highlighted instances of resistance and confrontation with the police.

Iranian LGBTI Refugees: The Marginalized of the Marginalized

22 May 2017  |  T24
The Hevi LGBTI Association organized events in Istanbul's Taksim for Iranian LGBTI refugees as part of the May 16-17 Anti-Homophobia and Transphobia Day. The events included a dinner and panels with Iranian LGBTI refugees from various Turkish cities discussing legal issues, discrimination, and the need for work permits and LGBTI-friendly workplaces. They also highlighted the lack of support organizations in Yalova, health care challenges, and negative treatment by police and local communities. The speakers, who remained anonymous for safety, emphasized the urgency of addressing these issues and the hope for organized spaces and better conditions.

LGBTI individuals faced police intervention even while dispersing

28 Jun 2016  |  T24
During the 24th Pride Week in Istanbul, the 14th LGBTI Pride March was banned, leading to a dispersal event where participants still faced police intervention. Despite the police blockade in Taksim and the detentions of individuals including journalists, the LGBTI community and supporters, including those from the Halkların Demokratik Kongresi (HDK) and Cumhuriyet Halk Partisi (CHP), continued to gather and express themselves. The day was marked by police using force, including tear gas and plastic bullets, but ended with the community defiantly celebrating with rainbow flags and confetti, despite the police's attempts to disperse them.
