About a young woman who defeated her pains by crossing the desert
The article recounts the story of Robyn, a woman who embarked on a solo journey across the Australian desert with four camels and her black dog, Digiti. Despite being ridiculed and deemed insane by men, she persisted and completed the 2,700 km trek, which took nine months. Along the way, she encountered the harsh beauty of nature, life-threatening challenges, and the Aboriginal people, who shared their culture with her. Robyn's adventure, documented in her book 'Tracks', is celebrated as a masterpiece of travel literature and a statement against gender discrimination. The book's success led to a film adaptation showcased at the Venice Film Festival, paying tribute to the desert, camels, and the loyalty of dogs.
Female Genital Mutilation on Trial
A doctor in Egypt is on trial for the first time for the death of a 12-year-old girl, Sohair al-Bata'a, following a female genital mutilation (FGM) procedure in Mansoura last year. The girl's father, who took her to the hospital, is also charged. FGM has been illegal in Egypt since 2008 but continues to be widely practiced. The case was initially dismissed, but after campaigns by local rights groups and the International Organization for Equality Now, as well as an investigation by the Egyptian National Council for Women, the public prosecutor agreed to reopen the case. A UNICEF study found that 91% of married women aged 15-49 in Egypt have been subjected to FGM, with 72% of procedures performed by medical professionals. The practice persists due to low education levels, poverty, early marriage advocacy, and claims by extremists that it reduces adultery. The National Council for Women's president, Hala Youssef, hopes the investigation will serve as a lesson against FGM. The article also discusses religious perspectives on FGM, with scholars like Essam Teleima and Yusuf al-Qaradawi stating that there is no religious text that mandates or recommends FGM, and harmful practices can be prohibited if they cause damage or corruption.
