Woman, Young, and Bald: An Aesthetic Taboo

05 Dec 2018  |  Pikara Magazine
Natàlia Sirvent, at 25, recounts her struggle with alopecia areata, an autoimmune disease causing hair loss. Initially attributing her condition to stress, she underwent various treatments, including costly and painful cortisone injections and irritants like difenciprone, with mixed results. The article discusses the significant psychological impact of hair loss, particularly for women, due to societal norms around femininity and identity. Nuria Hijano, who also experienced alopecia, created a blog and platform to support others, emphasizing self-acceptance. Sociologist Rose Weitz is cited, highlighting hair's role in gender identity. The article also touches on historical punishments involving shaving women's heads and the portrayal of bald women in media. Natàlia, now with universal alopecia, has adapted to her condition, feeling better despite the loss.

Dukan claims that Spanish nutritionists attack his diet without scientific arguments

12 Jun 2014  |  www.europapress.es
French doctor Pierre Dukan, creator of the Dukan Diet, has defended his weight loss method against criticism from Spanish nutritionists, claiming their attacks are unfair and lack scientific basis. The Spanish Association of Dietitians-Nutritionists previously published an article advising against the diet, citing health risks and lack of scientific support. Dukan refutes claims of serious health risks and suggests that the criticism is driven by the agri-food and pharmaceutical industries' financial interests. Despite being criticized by French medical organizations and facing controversy, Dukan continues to promote his diet, including his latest book 'El método Dukan suave', and is establishing a foundation to research obesity causes.

Cal Àfrica Cooperative will hire African immigrants to regularize their situation

04 May 2014  |  www.europapress.es
The Cal Àfrica Cooperative, founded on April 8 by Africans, plans to hire immigrants from the continent to improve their status and, in some cases, regularize their situation through employment contracts. The cooperative, which currently offers services in restoration, catering, recycling, and textile repairs, aims to employ Africans who wish to work and prioritize those displaced from the Poblenou warehouses nearly a year ago. The cooperative has 265 members but represents a larger community, as only those with Spanish residency could sign its constitution. The initiative began in 2002 after the Barcelona city council dispersed African encampments, leading to community formation across the city. The cooperative was first presented at the 'La realidad invocable' exhibition, with the Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Art (Macba) hiring the cooperative for catering and other services, making it the organization's first client.
