Environmental Complexity and Reduced Stocking Density Promote Positive Behavioral Outcomes in Broiler Chickens

23 Jun 2023  |  mdpi.com
A study conducted by Virginia Tech researchers investigated the effects of environmental complexity and stocking densities on the behavior of broiler chickens. The study found that providing a complex environment and lower stocking densities enhanced the welfare of broiler chickens by stimulating natural behaviors such as foraging, locomotion, and preening. The benefits of environmental complexity persisted as the chickens aged, despite a general reduction in activity levels. High stocking densities were associated with more frequent but shorter bouts of activity, suggesting disturbances and less frequent foraging, drinking, and eating. The study concludes that both environmental complexity and lower stocking densities can lead to higher welfare levels for broiler chickens.

Three men enjoy chicha in Medellín, Antioquia, Colombia, in 1897.

18 Dec 2017  |  Atlas Obscura
The article discusses the history of chicha, a traditional Colombian fermented corn drink, and its decline due to a marketing campaign by Bavaria Brewery and the Colombian government. Chicha was once a staple in Colombian culture, consumed since 3000 B.C. by the Muisca people and enjoyed by the working class. However, the drink was targeted as a symbol of vice and disorder, with the government and Bavaria Brewery portraying beer as a hygienic and modern alternative. Bavaria Brewery, founded by German immigrant Leo Kopp, became dominant in the beer market and was supported by the government's campaign against chicha, which included propaganda and restrictive laws. The decline of chicha was accelerated by the unrest following the assassination of Jorge Eliecer Gaitán in 1948, leading to a law that effectively banned chicha. Today, Bavaria has merged with SAB-Miller and then with Anheuser-Busch InBev, while chicha has become a rarity, mostly found in hidden chicherías.

Autocracy: Rules for Survival

20 Jun 2017  |  www.villagevoice.com
Masha Gessen, a Russian-American journalist, has been a critical voice following the presidential election, offering insights into the potential trajectory of American politics under an autocratic style of leadership, drawing from her experiences with Putin's Russia. Gessen's article 'Autocracy: Rules for Survival' in the New York Review of Books served as a guide for what to expect, particularly highlighting the risks to the LGBTQ community. She discusses the importance of Pride events, her skepticism of the Russia-Trump collusion narrative, and warns against conspiracy thinking. Gessen emphasizes the real dangers of Trump's policies over unproven conspiracies, suggesting that the focus should be on tangible issues such as immigration policies and government funding cuts rather than the Russia investigation, which she believes is fueled by a media campaign and lacks substantial evidence.

Meet the Cholita Wrestlers Beating Down the Patriarchy in Bolivia

03 May 2016  |  www.vice.com
The article describes the phenomenon of female wrestlers, known as 'cholitas', in El Alto, Bolivia. These indigenous Aymara and Quechua women, traditionally discriminated against, have found a unique form of expression through wrestling, a sport introduced to them by promoter Juan Mamani about 15 years ago. Despite initial skepticism and the challenges of balancing training with their personal lives, the cholitas have become a popular attraction, especially during events like Carnival. The article highlights the contrast between their traditional attire and the physicality of wrestling, as well as the empowerment and joy they experience through the sport. It also touches on the broader social context of indigenous women's rights in Bolivia.

The Rise and Fall of the Wiñay Wayna Pub on the Inca Trail

09 Feb 2016  |  Atlas Obscura
The article recounts the history of the Wiñay Wayna Pub, located along the Inca Trail in the Peruvian Andes. This pub, once owned by an Italian named Mario Caruso, was a unique establishment that served trekkers on their way to Machu Picchu. Despite its basic amenities, the pub offered a welcome respite and a celebratory beer to hikers after their arduous journey. However, the pub eventually closed down due to a combination of factors, including allegations of tax evasion by the owner, cocaine sales, and unruly behavior by patrons leading to fights, theft, and other disturbances. The pub's closure is seen by some as a return to the true spirit of the Inca Trail, emphasizing adventure over commercialization. The government has since taken control of the property, and it remains closed, with only a steward to maintain it.
