The Threat of Climate Change and Tidal Flooding on Coastal Children
Coastal children in Indonesia are increasingly facing health threats and educational disruptions due to more frequent tidal floods caused by climate change. The Indonesian Pediatric Association (IDAI) warns of serious health impacts, including malnutrition, mental health issues, and increased risk of vector-borne diseases. Local governments are taking mitigation steps, such as cleaning drainage systems and establishing health posts. Infrastructure improvements, including the construction of flood barriers, are underway. The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) is promoting family disaster preparedness, and the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK) is working on climate resilience projects. UNICEF reports that over 28 million children in Indonesia are highly vulnerable to coastal flooding. The environmental group Walhi notes that over 5,400 villages have been affected by tidal floods between 2017 and 2020, exacerbated by climate change and industrial activities.
