Forest Hill won a district football championship - 36 years ago

10 Nov 2021  |  palmbeachpost.com
In 1985, Forest Hill High School's football team, the Falcons, won their first district title by defeating the unbeaten Santaluces 12-7. The victory ended a 36-year championship drought for Forest Hill, which had struggled with player retention and long losing streaks. The team, coached by Tom Cherry, was known for its hard work and close-knit nature, overcoming size disadvantages with determination. Key players included Anthony Howard, Vesco Cooper, and Perry Balasis, the latter being named the 1985 Palm Beach Post Defensive Player of the Year. The Falcons' playoff run ended with a loss to Bradenton-Manatee, but the season remains a cherished memory for those involved.

Richards brilliant, but Marlins' bats silenced in loss

14 Apr 2018  |  mlb.com
In a closely contested baseball game at Marlins Park, the Pittsburgh Pirates secured a 1-0 victory over the Miami Marlins with a ninth-inning bunt by Corey Dickerson that allowed Starling Marte to score. Despite a strong performance from Marlins pitcher Trevor Richards, who pitched seven shutout innings, the Marlins' offense failed to capitalize on scoring opportunities. Pirates starter Jameson Taillon also performed well, contributing to the game's scoreless state until the ninth inning. The loss was particularly frustrating for Marlins closer Brad Ziegler, who expressed his disappointment after the game. The series is set to conclude with a game celebrating Jackie Robinson Day, where all players will wear No. 42 uniforms.
