Unappointed teacher brings smiles to tens of thousands of children

11 Jun 2019  |  euronews
Mehmet Özcan, a photographer and unappointed geography teacher from Iğdır, has distributed coats, shoes, and toys to approximately 80,000 children through social media campaigns. Despite limited resources, he has contributed to the happiness of thousands of children in the Eastern Anatolia Region, one of the poorest and harshest areas in Turkey. Özcan has established 13 libraries and continues to distribute hundreds of toys. He plans to undertake more projects for the children, including trips to see the sea and waterfalls, and even a potential visit to the Eiffel Tower in Paris with a group of children, if resources allow.

The only municipality in Diyarbakır without a trustee had its mayor determined by the Supreme Election Council

15 Apr 2019  |  euronews
In Diyarbakır's Bağlar district, Zeyyat Ceylan, the HDP candidate who won 71% of the votes in the March 31 elections, was denied his mandate due to a previous decree-law (KHK) dismissal. The Supreme Election Council (YSK) decided that mandates would not be given to elected mayors with KHK backgrounds, instead awarding them to the second-highest vote-getters, which in this case is AK Parti candidate Hüseyin Beyoğlu. Ceylan criticized the process as unjust and politically motivated, lacking legal basis. Local residents expressed anger at the YSK's decision, viewing it as a disregard for their democratic choice. The YSK's actions have been perceived negatively, with accusations of bias and legal violations.
