Education officials and security officers confiscated 29 mobile phones at a school in Dadaab, Garissa County, as the 2022 KCSE examinations began. Kenya National Examinations Council CEO Dr. David Nyeng'ere stated that the Directorate of Criminal Investigations is investigating the incident, and those responsible will face consequences. The issue was attributed to inadequate frisking by invigilators. Measures have been implemented to prevent malpractices, including opening examination containers at 7am and maintaining security throughout the day.

Child marriage costs Africa trillions of shillings, World Bank warns
30 Nov 2018  |  Nation  |  English  |  Gender-Based Violence
Child marriage in Africa results in significant economic losses, with a World Bank report estimating $63 billion in lost earnings and productivity for 12 countries, potentially doubling for the entire continent. The practice leads to lower education levels, higher rates of abuse, and adverse health outcomes for young mothers and their children. The report emphasizes the importance of secondary education in reducing early marriages and improving economic prospects for women. Despite being a target under the Sustainable Development Goals, comprehensive strategies and investments to end child marriage remain limited.

03 Oct 2022  |  Shahidi News  |  English  |  Education Policy
The Cabinet in Kenya has reviewed the state of education and the preparedness for the upcoming National Examinations in November. The exams include the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) and the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE). The Cabinet also noted the normalization of the education calendar from January 2023, marking the recovery from COVID-19 disruptions. Following President William Ruto's campaign promise, a 42-member Education Review Taskforce has been gazetted to review the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) and other aspects of the education system. The taskforce, chaired by Prof Raphael Munavu, will engage with stakeholders and the public, and report bi-monthly to the President, with a final report due in six months. Their mandate includes evaluating the CBC, assessing education laws, and making recommendations on various educational frameworks, including governance, quality assurance, teacher training, technology use, and public-private partnerships.
