30 years after the war, Slovenia protests against the pro-Orban government
25 Jun 2021  |  Frontiere News  |  Italian  |  Politics
On the 30th anniversary of Slovenia's independence, anti-government protests filled Prešeren Square in Ljubljana, driven by resentment towards Prime Minister Janez Janša's administration, which is seen as corrupt and undemocratic. Protesters, led by Jaša Jenull and Tea Jarc, demand Janša's resignation and early elections, accusing the government of betraying the people's will by forming a coalition with right-wing parties. The protests, which have been ongoing weekly since March 2020, contrast sharply with the official independence celebrations attended by right-wing leaders from neighboring countries.

Croatia, journey between open borders and walls: the joy for Schengen, the drama of the Balkan route
10 Jan 2023  |  www.ilsecoloxix.it  |  Italian  |  Migration
From January 1, 2023, Croatia joined the Schengen Area and the Eurozone, enabling free transit to other member countries and opening new economic opportunities. This historic change was celebrated by the Italian minority in Istria, as it allows free movement between Italy, Slovenia, and Croatia without long border queues. However, this new freedom contrasts with the impenetrability of the EU's external borders. To prevent migrants from entering the Schengen Area via the Balkan route, Slovenia had erected barbed wire fences along parts of its border with Croatia, which have now been mostly removed. The external border has shifted to the boundaries with Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina, where Croatia is fortifying its barriers to prevent migrant access, amid documented instances of police violence violating EU and international law.

Slovenia begins to refund COVID fines
29 Nov 2023  |  ru.euronews.com  |  Russian  |  Government Policy
The Slovenian government is refunding fines imposed for COVID-19 regulation violations, totaling around 1.7 million euros. This move, led by the center-left administration, aims to address what they describe as excessive enforcement by the previous right-wing government. The initiative includes removing violations from citizens' records and halting related legal proceedings. The policy change follows public discontent over strict pandemic measures and is part of broader efforts to restore civil liberties under Prime Minister Robert Golob.

Hungary Seals Border With Croatia in Migrant Crackdown
17 Oct 2015  |  www.nytimes.com  |  English  |  European Union
Hungary closed its border with Croatia to control the influx of migrants into Europe, following the completion of a razor-wire fence and the European Union's failure to devise a comprehensive migrant plan. This move disrupted the migrant route from the Balkans to Germany, prompting Croatia to redirect migrants to Slovenia. Both Croatia and Slovenia warned they might close their borders if Austria and Germany stopped accepting migrants.

Alpine villages terrorized by wolves
24 Mar 2023  |  ru.euronews.com  |  Russian  |  Agriculture
Wolves are causing fear among residents of border regions in Austria and Slovenia, with a significant increase in livestock deaths attributed to wolves in Carinthia. Slovenian farmer Matija Juvan received only partial government compensation for his sheep killed by wolves due to lost identification tags. The Slovenian government requires proof of wolf attacks for compensation. Hunters use carcasses to trap wolves, as partial culling is allowed in Slovenia and Austria, targeting mainly wolf-dog hybrids. The World Wildlife Fund argues that wolves protect forests from deer overpopulation, saving the forestry industry millions of euros. Meanwhile, Juvan contemplates abandoning sheep farming due to the stress of wolf attacks.
