LONDON'S CHELSEA PENSIONERS
London, United Kingdom Cultural June 4 @ 11:47am
Just south of London’s Kings Road and just north of the Thames is the impressive Royal Hospital, home for over 300 years to the Chelsea Pensioners. Charles II founded it for "the relief and succour" of his veteran soldiers and Sir Christopher Wren designed it. There are two categories of Chelsea Pensioner: the In-Pensioner who surrendered his Army Pension to be admitted as a resident at the Royal Hospital and the Out-Pensioner who was not a resident but held on to his pension. Currently some 300 army veterans are in residence. When these veterans are inside the Hospital, they wear a blue uniform but when they go out they wear their famous and distinctive scarlet coats.
