China in the Mekong Region.

Bangkok, Thailand Current Affairs, Science & Environment, Research, Social June 16 @ 3:54am

We hear much about the River Mekong, its rapid economic development and precarious position environmentally, but what about the surrounding land that feeds it?

A new report ‘State of Land in the Mekong Region,’ published by the University of Bern’s ‘Centre of Environment and Development’ and a Laos based NGO named ‘Mekong Region Land Governance,’ describes significant change over the last decade.

Based on this report, my article will highlight economic, social and environmental change in the region, with China emerging as a major investor and important destination for exports. What are the impacts of this on communities, the environment, and hopes for sustainable development?
