Major Hosomi Akinori's fatal crash in an F-35A Joint Strike Fighter in 2019 led to a temporary halt in Japan's F-35 flights and highlighted issues with the aircraft. Despite this, Japan continues to invest in the F-35 program, with a recent US$23 billion deal to acquire more units. Concurrently, Japan is developing its own next-generation stealth fighter, the F-X, led by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries. This move aims to address security challenges, particularly from China, and may involve future partnerships with the U.S. or U.K. The development marks a significant shift in Japan's defense strategy, potentially leading to high-end exports.
