Experts Doubt International Efforts to Reinstate Gabon's Bongo After Coup
11 Sept 2023  |  allAfrica.com  |  English  |  Gabon Military Takeover
The article discusses the political situation in Gabon following a military coup that deposed President Ali Bongo Ondimba. The military released Bongo from house arrest and appointed Raymond Ndong Sima as interim prime minister and General Brice Oligui Nguema as the transitional head of state. Experts, including David Otto-Endeley and Maja Bovcon, suggest that there is little international or regional interest in reinstating Bongo, given the dynastic nature of his rule and the contentious recent elections. The Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS) condemned the coup but has not taken further action. The article also touches on the potential implications for multinational companies and international relations, with Andrea Ngombet warning against pushing Gabon towards foreign powers like Russia and China through unmeasured global condemnation of the coup.

Mozambique: Debt crisis threatens to sink economy
01 Oct 2016  |  African Business  |  English  |  Economy
Mozambique has announced the need to restructure its debts due to unsustainable levels, with public debt expected to reach 130% of GDP by the end of 2016. The IMF, which had suspended aid after the revelation of $2bn in secret loans, is ready to assist in debt negotiations. The country's external debt exceeds $10bn, and repayment capacity is severely limited. Analysts predict a challenging renegotiation process with creditors. Mozambique's economic growth has stalled due to various factors, including violent clashes and falling commodity prices. A recent deal with ENI and BP for liquefied natural gas may be jeopardized by the ongoing debt crisis.

Argentina: Betting On Tech
07 Apr 2021  |  Global Finance Magazine  |  English  |  Investment
Argentina presents diverse investment opportunities in energy, natural resources, high-end services, and tourism, attracting foreign multinationals from the US and EU. However, economic growth is hindered by longstanding political issues and the Covid-19 crisis. The country's GDP saw a significant decline in 2020, but there are hopes for recovery through tourism and private investment. Despite challenges, Argentina's tech sector is thriving, with several unicorns and strong exports in software and IT services. Recent tax incentives aim to bolster this sector further, leveraging the country's skilled workforce.

Barrelling towards conflict: How the oil market reacted to Iran-US tensions
13 Jan 2020  |  CityAM  |  English  |  Geopolitical Conflict
The article discusses the impact of rising tensions between the US and Iran on the global oil market, highlighting the volatility in oil prices following the US-approved killing of Iranian General Qassem Soleimani. It examines the broader geopolitical conflict, including Iran's retaliatory actions and the US's maximum pressure campaign. Expert analyses suggest that while immediate conflict has de-escalated, underlying tensions remain unresolved, keeping the risk of future instability high. The article also notes the potential for the US to mitigate disruptions in oil supply due to its status as a net exporter.

Ruptured Oil Pipeline Causes South Sudan's Revenues to Nosedive
29 Mar 2024  |  www.rigzone.com  |  English  |  Economic Impact
South Sudan's state revenues have significantly declined due to a ruptured pipeline, which is essential for exporting crude oil. The damage to the pipeline in Sudan has halted oil flow from major fields, impacting 90% of South Sudan's revenues. Finance Minister Awow Daniel Chuang is seeking financial assistance abroad and working with the Central Bank of Sudan to release funds for salaries. Many state workers have been unpaid for six months. The revenue shortfall raises concerns about South Sudan's potential military intervention in Sudan's civil war to repair infrastructure and the stability of President Salva Kiir's regime, especially regarding unpaid military salaries.

South Africa's Ramaphosa survives impeachment vote in parliament
05 Apr 2023  |  Modern Ghana  |  English  |  Corruption
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa avoided an impeachment inquiry after a parliamentary vote, with his party, the ANC, defeating the motion. Allegations had surfaced that Ramaphosa may have committed serious violations and misconduct by concealing a large cash theft at his farm. Despite the scandal, the ANC, which holds a majority in the National Assembly, backed Ramaphosa, who has not been charged with any crime and denies wrongdoing. The vote came ahead of an ANC meeting to elect new leadership, where Ramaphosa is expected to be re-elected. The incident has raised questions about Ramaphosa's image as a leader free from corruption, a reputation he sought to establish after his predecessor, Jacob Zuma's tenure was marred by corruption allegations.

World’s most violent cities: Medellín crime surge helps Latin America top list
26 May 2022  |  www.theguardian.com  |  English  |  Public Safety
Latin America has been identified as the region with nearly two-thirds of the world's most dangerous cities for crime, according to Verisk Maplecroft's research. The study, which considered various security risks, found that eight of the twelve cities with the worst crime scores are in Latin America. Medellín, Colombia, once notorious for Pablo Escobar's cartel, has seen a resurgence in crime, ranking it alongside San Salvador and Chihuahua as high-risk cities. Bogotá, Rio de Janeiro, and Mexico City are also among the top three riskiest large cities. Venezuela's political instability has contributed to high crime rates in several of its cities. Haiti's capital, Port-au-Prince, is also facing severe gang-related violence, exacerbated by the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse, leading to a power vacuum and increased violence.
