Abject Lessons
08 Aug 2018  |  popula.com  |  English  |  Economic Development
The article discusses the challenges faced by Ghanaian education, particularly through the lens of Francis, a former teacher who now manages an organic farm. It critiques the content of social studies textbooks that blame Ghana's poverty on cultural factors and a 'dependency mentality,' while downplaying the impacts of colonialism and neoliberal economic policies. The narrative highlights the contradictions in these educational materials and the broader implications for Ghana's national identity and development. Francis's personal story underscores the tension between teaching for exams and fostering critical thinking and leadership in students.

Strengthening Sustainable Land Management in Sub-Saharan Africa: Insights from Northern Ghana Workshops
24 Nov 2023  |  Citinewsroom - Comprehensive News in Ghana  |  English  |  Cultural Norms in Agriculture
A consortium of German and African research projects, funded by the BMBF, is developing a blueprint for Sustainable Land Management (SLM) in sub-Saharan Africa, with a focus on ecological, economic, and social aspects, including gender equity. Two workshops were held in Northern Ghana at the UDS campus, organized by INTERFACES, COINS, and DecLaRe projects. These workshops aimed to address land use challenges, promote participatory learning, and develop a gender-responsive theory of change. Key issues discussed included land access for women, legal frameworks, climate change, and soil degradation. Traditional authorities' roles in land distribution were also examined, with insights from local chiefs. The workshops also included field visits to showcase successful agricultural interventions. Stakeholders emphasized the need for a comprehensive approach to food security, ecological integrity, equitable resource access, and effective conflict resolution. Recommendations included comprehensive land-use planning, formalizing land tenancy, and changing local norms to support sustainable land management.

Dr Adutwum’s claims against GES Director-General completely false
17 Feb 2023  |  www.fact-checkghana.com  |  English  |  Investigative Reporting
Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, Minister of Education, denied allegations of corruption in the Computerised School Placement System on Peace FM's Kokrokoo show, accusing former GES Director-General Prof Kwasi Opoku-Amankwa of being behind the accusations. Fact-Check Ghana found Dr Adutwum's claims to be false, as both he and Prof Opoku-Amankwa had full access to school placements and should bear responsibility for any fraud. Prof Opoku-Amankwa admitted his part in the scam and reported the corruption to the National Intelligence Bureau and the Criminal Investigations Department, contrary to Dr Adutwum's claims.

How Africa has tackled covid-19
15 Jul 2020  |  The BMJ  |  English  |  Public Health
African countries have faced significant challenges in tackling COVID-19 due to underfunded health systems, shortages of medical supplies, and limited testing capacity. Despite these obstacles, efforts such as the creation of the Africa Medical Supplies Platform and innovative testing strategies in countries like Ghana have shown promise. South Africa, the hardest-hit country, has struggled with testing backlogs and healthcare worker shortages. North African countries like Egypt and Algeria have seen sharp rises in cases, while West African nations like Nigeria have been criticized for low testing rates. East African countries have taken varied approaches, with some, like Uganda, leveraging their experience with Ebola to manage the pandemic effectively.
