Congo extends presidential voting

| Political Unrest
Lengthy delays at the polls forced officials to extend voting in Congo's presidential election, raising concerns about the ballot's credibility. The election commission extended voting for polls that couldn't open on the scheduled day. Despite significant spending to ensure a credible process, issues like faulty voting machines, unlegible voting cards, and unregistered voters plagued the election. Opposition candidate Denis Mukwege rejected the extension, questioning the results' legitimacy. President Felix Tshisekedi seeks re-election against 26 candidates, with Moise Katumbi as a main rival. The election's outcome is crucial for Congo, a nation with significant mineral resources and a history of disputed elections.

Why Pak politicians need to learn their history

Indian Defence Review

The article discusses the Indian Supreme Court's decision to uphold the abrogation of Article 370, which revoked Jammu and Kashmir's special status. It criticizes Pakistan's response, suggesting that Pakistani politicians and media are misinformed about the historical and legal context of the issue. The author references historical documents and UN resolutions to argue that Pakistan's claims over Jammu and Kashmir are not supported by international law. The article also touches on the role of British officers in the early conflict over Kashmir, particularly Major William Brown's controversial handover of Gilgit to Pakistan. The author suggests that the Indian government has failed to properly inform the media about the historical facts of the Kashmir issue and concludes by mentioning a British parliamentary resolution and the legal status of the Shaksgam Valley.

Despite a global trade slowdown, UAE-India non-oil trade grew by 3.9% in 2023, with further growth expected. The Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (Cepa) and local currency trade settlements have strengthened ties. The UAE's non-oil foreign trade reached a record Dh3.5 trillion in 2023. However, regional conflicts and security threats pose risks to trade. India's restrictions on agricultural exports due to food security concerns have impacted global commodity prices. The UAE and India aim to double their non-oil trade to $100 billion by 2030, with recent agreements like the India-Middle East-Europe Corridor enhancing connectivity.

Proposed citizenship amendments will affect Sabah indigenous community

The proposed amendments to the Federal Constitution regarding citizenship could significantly impact the indigenous community in Sabah, particularly those still fighting for their citizenship. Anne Baltazar, founder of Anak, highlights the case of Tabias Yarun, a Lundayeh man from Tenom, who has been repeatedly denied citizenship despite being born and raised in Sabah. The amendments, which include not granting citizenship to children of parents holding red ICs, are seen as regressive and could worsen statelessness in Malaysia. However, some amendments aim to grant Malaysian mothers the equal right to confer automatic citizenship on their children born overseas. The Attorney-General’s Chambers is drafting these amendments, with input from the Conference of Rulers.
