A Bright Future? Yes, With These Solar Power Technologies
29 Apr 2015  |  earth911.com  |  English  |  Technology Innovation
Solar power production in the United States has increased significantly, with projections indicating it will become the world's largest electricity source by 2050. Efficiency improvements and innovations, such as concentrated photovoltaic systems and new materials, have led to higher energy conversion rates. Researchers continue to break efficiency records, with some systems achieving up to 46% conversion. Solar technology is also becoming more compact and lighter, with potential applications like solar windows and highways. The growth in solar power is driven by falling equipment costs, faster installations, government subsidies, and industry-wide innovation, with forecasts predicting substantial increases in photovoltaic capacity.

Variability between Different Hand-Held Dynamometers for Measuring Muscle Strength
14 Mar 2024  |  www.mdpi.com  |  English  |  Technology
The study investigates the variability between six commercially available hand-held dynamometers for measuring isometric muscle strength in thirty healthy individuals. The dynamometers tested include Citec, Nicholas, MicroFET2, Commander, Jamar Plus, and Baseline Hydraulic. The study found that several dynamometers can be used interchangeably for measuring muscle strength, which maximizes the use of normative reference values. The Commander dynamometer under-recorded muscle strength compared to the others. The study enhances the utility of hand-held dynamometers in clinical and research settings by supporting the interchangeability of different models.

Indonesia’s Presidential Race Takes Shape, in Shadow of Hard
11 Aug 2018  |  www.nytimes.com  |  English  |  Social Media Campaigns
Indonesia's upcoming presidential election will be a rematch between President Joko Widodo and former army general Prabowo Subianto, echoing the contentious 2014 race. Analysts fear a resurgence of smear campaigns and sectarian intolerance, particularly targeting the small but influential ethnic Chinese community. The election, Indonesia's fourth since its democratic transition in 1998, may see social media used to spread false claims, as seen in the past. Hard-line Islamic groups, some allied with Prabowo's Gerindra party, are expected to play a significant role in the campaign.

Hot Qubits and Goldilocks Ions
29 Sept 2020  |  cacm.acm.org  |  English  |  Pharmaceuticals
Quantum computing holds the potential to vastly outperform current supercomputers, leveraging qubits that exhibit unique quantum mechanical phenomena like superposition and entanglement. Despite the promise, significant challenges remain, particularly in scaling up qubit numbers while maintaining low error rates. Researchers are exploring innovative approaches to address these issues, including the development of 'hot qubits' that operate at higher temperatures, faster quantum gate operations using trapped Rydberg ions, and a new 'Goldilocks ion' for error reduction. These advancements could pave the way for more practical and scalable quantum computing solutions, impacting fields such as AI, engineering, and pharmaceuticals.

Cambodia's Fate Mapped Out by Hun Sen’s Victory
24 Jul 2023  |  www.voanews.com  |  English  |  Power Transition
Prime Minister Hun Sen and the Cambodian People’s Party secured a decisive victory in the recent elections, winning 120 out of 125 seats. The U.S. Department of State criticized the election as neither free nor fair, leading to visa restrictions and a pause in certain foreign assistance programs. Hun Sen's son, Hun Manet, is expected to take over as prime minister by the end of August, continuing the family's political legacy. Despite his Western education, experts predict little change in Cambodia's political landscape, with ongoing issues such as Chinese naval base construction and the detention of political activists. The election saw a high voter turnout but was marked by a lack of competition and significant security measures.

It emphasizes the importance of the 'publish or perish' culture in academia and how AI can assist in summarizing research findings but also create fictitious results, a phenomenon known as 'hallucination'. The article cites a recent incident where attorneys faced sanctions for using ChatGPT in legal documents, and it raises concerns about AI's role in generating fraudulent scientific papers. It also touches on the peer-review process, the non-replication of experiments by reviewers, and the potential for AI to assist in detecting scientific fraud. Bangladesh scientists create $3 kit. Can it help detect COVID-19?
24 Mar 2020  |  www.aljazeera.com  |  English  |  Healthcare
Scientists in Bangladesh have developed a $3 testing kit that can detect COVID-19 in less than 15 minutes, receiving approval for mass production from the Directorate General of Drug Administration. The kit, created by Gonoshasthaya-RNA Biotech Limited, is similar to one developed in China and offers a cost-effective alternative to the expensive RT-PCR tests. While the rapid test has limitations, such as potential false negatives, it is seen as a viable option given the current shortage of testing kits in Bangladesh. Experts emphasize the need for further validation, but the kit's affordability and quick results make it a promising tool in the fight against COVID-19.

Swimming in Sydney's Nepean, Hawkesbury and Parramatta rivers is 'a huge act of faith', say scientists
06 Jan 2019  |  www.abc.net.au  |  English  |  Environmental Concerns
Scientists Ian Wright and Stuart Khan have raised concerns about the water quality in western Sydney's rivers, including the Nepean, Hawkesbury, and Parramatta, as residents face the risk of swimming in contaminated water. Despite high temperatures driving locals to these popular spots, there is no public data on water safety due to a lack of testing by the New South Wales Government's Beachwatch program, which only covers eastern Sydney beaches. Dr. Wright highlighted the potential health risks from pollutants and pathogens, while Dr. Khan advocated for extending Beachwatch to ensure the safety of these 'jewels of Sydney'. The Office of Environment and Heritage, however, stated there are no plans to expand the program.

Translation of Winston Peters' name sparks media ethics debate
05 Apr 2023  |  Newsroom  |  English  |  Foreign Interference
The article by Laura Walters discusses the controversy surrounding the translation of New Zealand Deputy Prime Minister Winston Peters' name in Chinese-language media in New Zealand. The term '老皮' (Lǎo pí), which has been used to refer to Peters, translates to various terms such as 'old naughty' or 'old fart', and its use has raised questions about objectivity and potential bias. China experts and media ethics professionals have expressed concerns over the use of such nicknames in reporting, suggesting it could be derogatory and influence audience perspectives. The article also touches on the broader issue of the Chinese Communist Party's control over Chinese diaspora media and the potential for foreign interference in New Zealand's media landscape. The Justice Select Committee is examining the matter as part of its inquiry into foreign interference, with submissions from China scholar Anne-Marie Brady and others.

Lions pose a significant threat to cattle farmers in Botswana, where conservation efforts have led to a large lion population. Neil Jordan from the Botswana Predator Conservation Trust proposes painting eyes on cows to deter lion attacks, inspired by observing predator-prey interactions. Initial trials showed promising results, with painted cows avoiding lion attacks. The study is expanding, though experts remain skeptical about long-term effectiveness. The initiative highlights the need for non-lethal solutions to human-wildlife conflicts, crucial for the future of wild lions amid habitat loss and human encroachment.
