Women with early breast cancer will survive more than 5 years
01 Oct 2023  |  www.latercera.com  |  Spanish  |  Breast Cancer
A study by the University of Oxford reveals a significant decrease in the five-year mortality rate for women diagnosed with early breast cancer, dropping from 14% to 5% since 1990. The study, published in the British Medical Journal, analyzed data from over 500,000 women in England and attributes the improvement to early diagnosis. Experts like Carolyn Taylor and Jennifer Simmons highlight the importance of these findings, though Simmons cautions that increased detection might include non-clinically relevant cancers. In Chile, breast cancer remains a leading cause of death among women, prompting government initiatives for early detection and free preventive mammograms.

Breast cancer, a prevalent disease affecting both women and men, is surrounded by numerous myths. While family history is a factor, most cases are not hereditary, with lifestyle and environmental factors playing significant roles. Men, though less frequently affected, can also develop breast cancer. The risk increases with age, but younger women are increasingly being diagnosed with aggressive forms. Post-treatment, patients must remain vigilant as recurrence is possible. Global statistics from WHO highlight the disease's impact, emphasizing the need for awareness and early detection, particularly in developing countries like Nigeria, Ghana, and Kenya.

Outcomes with CDK4/6 Inhibitors Vary in BC
01 Sept 2023  |  www.mdedge.com  |  English  |  Breast Cancer
The PALMARES-2 study, presented by Claudio Vernieri at the American Society of Clinical Oncology meeting, compared the efficacy of CDK4/6 inhibitors abemaciclib, ribociclib, and palbociclib in treating hormone receptor-positive, HER2-negative advanced breast cancer. The study found that abemaciclib and ribociclib were associated with better progression-free survival compared to palbociclib, particularly in patients with endocrine-resistant or luminal B-like disease, and premenopausal women. The study highlighted the importance of real-world data in determining the most effective treatment options, noting significant baseline imbalances among patients. The findings suggest that abemaciclib and ribociclib may be more suitable in specific clinical contexts, although overall survival data remain immature.

Epigenomic Profiling Advises Therapeutic Potential of Leukotriene Receptor Inhibitors for a Subset of Triple-Negative Breast Tumors
11 Dec 2023  |  MDPI  |  English  |  Cancer Research
Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is an aggressive subtype with poor survival rates, and chemotherapy has been the primary treatment. Genome-wide analysis of DNA methylation identified a subset of TNBC samples with significant hypomethylation at the LTB4R/LTB4R2 genes' CpG islands, suggesting potential upregulation of these genes. Kaplan–Meier analysis revealed poorer overall survival for TNBC patients with upregulated LTB4R. The study assessed the therapeutic effects of various drugs, including leukotriene receptor inhibitors, on TNBC cell lines with hypomethylated and upregulated LTB4R/LTB4R2 genes. Drugs such as LY255283, Minocycline, Silibinin, Piceatannol, Mitiglinide, 1-Azakenpaullone, Carbetocin, and Pim-1-inhibitor-2 were identified as candidates for additional treatment of TNBC patients with tumors demonstrating LTB4R/LTB4R2 hypomethylation/upregulation. The findings suggest that the epigenetic status of leukotriene B4 receptors could be a novel predictive and prognostic biomarker for TNBC, potentially improving individualized therapy for TNBC patients.

The emotional impact of a breast cancer diagnosis is profound, often leading to significant mental health challenges. Experts like Ana Monroy and Martín Escandón emphasize the importance of psychological support, which is currently lacking in Spain's national health system. ITGB1BP1, a novel transcriptional target of CD44-downstream
01 Oct 2023  |  www.dovepress.com  |  English  |  Breast Cancer
Breast cancer is a prevalent malignancy in women globally, including Qatar. The study focuses on the role of ITGB1BP1, a novel transcriptional target of CD44-downstream signaling, in breast cancer cell invasion and metastasis. ITGB1BP1, also known as ICAP-1, binds to the cytoplasmic tail of β1 integrin and plays a role in cell motility, metastasis, and integrin binding. The research highlights the involvement of ITGB1BP1 in various oncogenic pathways, including PI3K/AKT and MAPK/ERK, which are critical for tumor cell survival, proliferation, and invasion. The study provides evidence supporting the hypothesis that ITGB1BP1 is a downstream target of CD44/HA interaction, promoting tumor cell invasion and metastasis.

Unveiling the future of breast cancer assessment: a critical review on generative adversarial networks in elastography ultrasound
01 Oct 2023  |  Frontiers  |  English  |  Breast Cancer
The article critically reviews the use of Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) in synthesizing elastography ultrasound (EUS) images for breast cancer diagnosis. It highlights the advantages of EUS over traditional ultrasound, such as providing additional information on tissue elasticity, which aids in more accurate diagnosis. The review focuses on the methodology proposed by Yao et al., which uses GANs to generate virtual EUS (V-EUS) images from conventional B-mode ultrasound. The GAN framework includes enhancements like a tumor discriminator and color balancing module, and it has been validated using a large dataset from multiple medical centers. The review also discusses the challenges and future directions in the field, such as the need for further validation across different populations and the importance of explainability in neural network models.
