Public Records Access in Indiana: An Audit of Compliance
20 Dec 2023  |  The Media School  |  English  |  Electronic Records Compliance
The article discusses a compliance audit conducted by The Media School at Indiana University in partnership with the Indiana Coalition for Open Government, which tested Indiana county agencies' adherence to the Access to Public Records Act. The audit revealed that nearly half of the agencies did not respond to email requests for public records, and a third did not respond to follow-up calls. However, those that did respond were mostly willing to provide documents electronically. The audit aimed to assess the effectiveness of online access to public records. The article also touches on the historical context of public records access in Indiana, the legal framework for electronic records requests, and the varying levels of government responsiveness. It highlights the challenges requesters face in obtaining records electronically and the reluctance of some local governments to adopt digital practices. The article concludes with a discussion on the trend towards increased online transparency and the benefits it can bring to both government agencies and the public.

The Spread of College-Town Cool
14 Dec 2023  |  www.governing.com  |  English  |  Cultural Change
College towns like Bloomington and Moscow, once unique for their amenities and culture, are now less distinctive as the rest of America has caught up with diverse offerings such as good coffee, ethnic restaurants, and arts. Urban analyst Aaron Renn reflects on how these towns, influenced by baby boomers with counterculture ideals, now face challenges due to anti-development sentiments leading to high living costs. Despite this, the presence of colleges and the growing number of affluent households continue to support these towns. However, college towns are no longer the exclusive havens of 'cool' they once were, but rather part of a broader landscape of desirable living spaces in the country.

Comparing Types of Parenting: Authoritative, Permissive, More
27 Sept 2019  |  www.healthline.com  |  English  |  Child Development
The article explores various parenting styles, including authoritative, authoritarian, attachment, permissive, free-range, helicopter, and uninvolved/neglectful. It discusses the pros and cons of each style, supported by research findings. Authoritative parenting is highlighted as the most effective, promoting mental health and well-being in children. Authoritarian parenting, while providing structure, may lead to negative outcomes like delinquency and depression. Attachment parenting fosters independence and emotional control but can be demanding for parents. Permissive parenting allows freedom but may result in higher stress and health issues. Free-range parenting encourages independence but carries risks of unsupervised harm. Helicopter parenting can reduce risky behaviors but may hinder self-confidence. Uninvolved parenting is linked to poor emotional and social outcomes. The article emphasizes that no single style is perfect and encourages a balanced approach tailored to individual children.

Good or bad? When it comes to food, it’s not that simple
28 Feb 2020  |  www.downtoearth.org.in  |  English  |  Dietary Guidelines
For decades, fat and cholesterol were considered harmful to health, leading to dietary guidelines that discouraged their consumption. However, recent research by US scientists has found no significant relationship between dietary cholesterol and blood cholesterol. This shift in understanding highlights the limitations of epidemiology, which can only show correlations, not causations. The new guidelines, based on randomized controlled trials, suggest that replacing fat with carbohydrates does not necessarily prevent heart disease. Despite these findings, the article advises a balanced approach to diet, emphasizing moderation.

Whistleblower Protection Laws: A Global Perspective
29 Jun 2023  |  www.zodiakmalawi.com  |  English  |  Anti-Corruption
Whistleblowers are increasingly hesitant to share information due to fear of retaliation. Many countries have ratified whistleblower protection laws, but these are often not practical. Malawi lacks standalone legislation for whistleblower protection, with the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) leading efforts to establish such laws. The European Union's directive for companies to implement whistleblower protection by 2021 has seen limited compliance. In the USA, whistleblower protection varies by state, with calls for stronger national laws. Experts argue that effective whistleblower laws are essential for fighting corruption and strengthening democracy.
