Study on the attack rate and neuroimaging results in MS patients with URIs caused by COVID-19 and non-COVID-19 infections

| Neuroimaging
A study conducted from May 2020 to April 2021 followed 362 patients with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (MS) to evaluate the attack rate and neuroimaging results in MS patients with upper respiratory infections (URIs) caused by COVID-19 and non-COVID-19 infections. The study found that COVID-19 increases the risk of MS exacerbations similarly to other viral URIs. The exacerbation rate ratios (RR) for attacks related to COVID-19 and non-COVID-19 URIs were comparable, and there was no significant alteration in the number of baseline GAD-enhancing lesions during exacerbations within or outside the at-risk period (ARP). The findings suggest the need for appropriate protective measures to prevent further deterioration of MS patients' health during the pandemic.

Iran's new Hijab and Chastity law, approved on November 30, has sparked significant controversy and criticism within the country, including from senior clerics. The law imposes severe penalties on women who violate the hijab mandate and encourages public reporting of violators. Prominent activist Nasrin Sotoudeh has condemned the law as a 'vengeful act' against women, warning of potential protests if it is not repealed. The law has been criticized as unimplementable and counterproductive, with concerns that it may lead to increased resentment towards religious teachings among the youth. The legislation has also faced opposition from various sectors, including the entertainment industry, which has called for its repeal.

Despite attempts by the Russian Embassy in Tehran to influence Iranian media coverage, there is a notable societal distrust toward Russia within Iran. Iranian authorities are increasingly using mental health allegations to repress women who violate the country's hijab law, branding them as psychologically unstable. This tactic coincides with growing protests against Iran's clerical regime and calls for greater freedoms. Experts and activists criticize the misuse of psychiatry as a tool of repression, drawing parallels to historical abuses in other autocratic states. The establishment of a rehabilitation center in Tehran for women defying the hijab law has sparked further controversy, with critics arguing it reflects the authorities' struggle to enforce the dress code. China's recent mediation between Saudi Arabia and Iran marks a significant shift in its role in the Middle East, traditionally dominated by the US. While China has established itself as a vital economic partner in the region, it lacks the military presence and historical influence of the US. Experts suggest that China is not aiming to replace the US but rather to expand its diplomatic and economic influence. The Belt and Road Initiative and technological advancements like 5G connectivity have bolstered China's clout. However, China's reluctance to take on security responsibilities may limit its long-term influence. The article highlights the contrasting approaches of China and the US, with China being viewed as a more neutral and less controversial partner.

The article discusses the persistent Holocaust denial by the Iranian regime, particularly by Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and other officials like former diplomat Mohsen Pakaein and Ayatollah Mohammad Khatami. It highlights Iran's rejection of a UN resolution against Holocaust denial and distortion, and the spread of denial narratives through media outlets like Mashreq News and academic journals such as Politics Quarterly Journal. An Iranian court has ordered the US government and 42 other US entities to pay $49.77 billion in damages for the assassination of Gen. Qasem Soleimani. The ruling underscores Iran's ongoing pursuit of retribution for Soleimani's death, which has significantly strained US-Iran relations. The US government has not commented on the ruling and is unlikely to comply due to the lack of diplomatic relations. The assassination, carried out by a US drone strike in Baghdad in January 2020, also killed Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis and further damaged US-Iraq relations. Tensions between the US and Iran have escalated since the US withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal in 2018, with recent efforts to reenter the deal proving unsuccessful.
