Following the Impact of Science on Biodiversity Conservation
13 May 2024  |  rebelion.org  |  Spanish  |  Climate Change
A 21-year-old student from the University of Leeds, inspired by the IPBES Global Assessment, is making a documentary in Pakistan about beekeepers facing climate change challenges. The IPBES report highlights the risk of extinction for over a million species, a narrative that has spurred individuals and organizations to action. IPBES has influenced policy changes worldwide, including in Nigeria and South Africa, where businesses are incorporating biodiversity into their strategies. The IPBES Track database documents the impact of their scientific reports, showing how science can lead to tangible change. At COP15, UN Secretary-General António Guterres emphasized the urgent need for a biodiversity framework. The student envisions a summit prioritizing biodiversity equally with climate change.

Why the IPCC Can’t Escape Climate Politics
01 Oct 2023  |  Green European Journal  |  English  |  IPCC
The IPCC's Sixth Assessment Report highlights the ongoing political challenges in addressing climate change. Established 35 years ago, the IPCC has faced criticism and controversy, particularly regarding its role in educating and convincing the public and policymakers. The organization has been criticized for its lack of geographic and epistemic diversity, and its political summaries often simplify complex issues. The IPCC's legitimacy lies in facilitating dialogue among stakeholders, but its structure may become obsolete as climate science and policy become more polycentric. The text suggests that the IPCC should collaborate more with civil society organizations to create space for new forms of action.

Brazil to propose global action at G20 to regulate digital platforms
09 Jan 2024  |  noticias.uol.com.br  |  Portuguese  |  Politics
The Brazilian government, under President Lula, has initiated bilateral consultations with G20 members to address the regulation of digital platforms. Despite resistance from the US and China, Brazil aims to find a proposal acceptable to both. The strategy includes national responses such as legislation and vaccination campaigns, but recognizes the need for international cooperation. Brazil, holding the G20 presidency, seeks to use the bloc as a platform to discuss digital regulation, drawing parallels with the IPCC model for climate change. The goal is to establish a common understanding and initiate a global action plan, with a meeting anticipated in São Paulo in April.

Invasion of Pine Trees in the Dunes of Florianópolis Worsens Climate Change Effects on the Island
01 Nov 2023  |  Acessa.com  |  Portuguese  |  Invasive Species
Efforts to remove invasive pine trees from the dunes of Florianópolis are crucial for protecting the island from the adverse effects of climate change. Led by UFSC professor Michele Dechoum and supported by community volunteers, these actions aim to preserve the native restinga vegetation, which serves as a natural barrier against coastal erosion and extreme weather events. Despite governmental initiatives and regulations, much of the work falls on citizens due to insufficient funding and delays. The invasive species, introduced in the 1960s, continue to pose significant environmental challenges, necessitating ongoing community and institutional efforts.

The Milei Government Withdraws the Argentine Delegation from COP29: What Does It Really Mean?
13 Nov 2024  |  climatica.coop  |  Spanish  |  Environmental Policy
The Argentine government, led by Javier Milei, has withdrawn its delegation from the COP29 climate conference in Baku, Azerbaijan, citing a desire not to interfere with conference consensus. This decision has sparked criticism from environmental experts and organizations, who argue it undermines Argentina's role in international climate negotiations and its ability to secure necessary climate financing. The move is seen as a departure from Argentina's previous stance of holding developed countries accountable for climate financing. Critics, including Marina Silva and Óscar Soria, emphasize the potential negative impacts on Argentina's climate resilience and economic stability. The decision is viewed as a significant shift in Argentina's international climate policy.

Warming climate threatens to worsen air quality in already polluted Kathmandu
29 Apr 2024  |  Mongabay Environmental News  |  English  |  Public Health
Kathmandu faces severe air pollution, exacerbated by vehicle emissions, factory pollution, construction dust, and its valley location. Climatologist Sudeep Thakuri warns that climate change may worsen the situation by affecting rainfall patterns, which cleanse the air. The city's air quality is already a major health concern, with around 5,000 deaths annually. Wildfires, influenced by climate change, contribute to the pollution. Air quality specialist Bhupendra Das and conservationist Rajendra Narayan Suwal emphasize the need for regional cooperation and forest management to address the issue. The article suggests that tackling air pollution can also have positive impacts on emissions reduction.

The latest IPCC report highlights the urgent need to end oil and gas production to mitigate climate change impacts. The report warns of extreme weather events, mass displacement, and worsening inequalities, particularly in the Global South. Despite the UK government's recent approval of new oil and gas fields, experts argue that this contradicts the Paris Agreement and will not alleviate the energy crisis. Instead, investment in renewable energy is recommended. The article criticizes the UK government's handling of climate policies and emphasizes the economic and environmental benefits of transitioning to renewable energy.

Have Agricultural Land-Use Carbon Emissions in China Peaked? An Analysis Based on Decoupling Theory and Spatial EKC Model
28 Apr 2024  |  MDPI  |  English  |  Global Warming
China's agricultural land-use carbon emissions (ALUCEs) peaked at 396.9 Mt C-eq in 2015 and have since plateaued, with emissions from agricultural materials and soil management declining, while those from rice cultivation and livestock breeding remain stable or rising. The study uses decoupling theory and the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) model to confirm the robustness of the peaking process, revealing an N-shaped relationship between ALUCEs and agricultural GDP. The findings suggest that while emissions have plateaued, continued efforts are needed to ensure a transition to a declining phase, with significant regional variations in emission trends and decoupling states.

Smallholder Farmers Gain Least from International Climate Funding
14 Nov 2023  |  www.globalissues.org  |  English  |  International Finance
Smallholder farmers, producing a third of the world's food, received only 0.3% of international climate finance in 2021, amounting to USD 2 billion out of USD 8.4 billion allocated to agriculture. This is disproportionate to the estimated USD 300-350 billion needed annually for sustainable food systems and the USD 170 billion required by Sub-Saharan African farmers. The study by Climate Focus highlights the impact of climate change on agricultural productivity and the sector's contribution to greenhouse gas emissions and deforestation. It criticizes the complex access to funds for smallholder farmers and calls for increased finance for sustainable, climate-resilient practices, including agroecology. The report, representing over 35 million smallholder producers, urges governments to recognize farmers as key to climate adaptation and food security, and to involve them in decision-making processes.

The case, supported by environmental organization Germanwatch, could set a precedent for climate justice, potentially holding the world's largest greenhouse gas emitters accountable for their contributions to global warming. The lawsuit demands RWE pay a portion of the costs for protective measures against flooding in Huaraz. The case has reached the Oberlandesgericht Hamm, and a group of German experts has already assessed the situation in Peru. RWE denies legal responsibility, but the outcome could influence future climate litigation worldwide.
