BBC editor ‘helped Somali criminals fight deportation’

Concerns have arisen about BBC editor Mary Harper's involvement as an expert witness in immigration cases, particularly those involving Somali criminals. Harper's evidence has been used to argue against deportation on grounds of potential danger in Somalia. The BBC stated that while staff can act as expert witnesses, such work requires prior approval. Harper, who has a background in African studies and journalism, is leaving the BBC and has also been working with the United Nations Development Programme. Latin America stagnates in the Human Development Index below pre-pandemic levels
13 Mar 2024  |  El País México  |  Spanish  |  Pandemic Recovery
Latin America and the Caribbean scored 0.763 in the latest Human Development Index (HDI) by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), still below the pre-pandemic level of 0.768. Despite slight improvements, the region struggles to recover from the impacts of COVID-19 on health, education, and quality of life. Michelle Muschett, UNDP's regional director, highlighted the region's lack of resilience in recovering from the pandemic's shock. Globally, the HDI fell for the first time in history in 2020 and 2021 but has since recovered to a record high in 2023, though still below the pre-pandemic trend. The report also notes significant disparities between countries, with only half of the least developed countries recovering, while all OECD countries are projected to have recovered. In Latin America, 12 countries have regained or surpassed pre-pandemic development levels, with Mexico and Chile showing notable improvements. However, 21 countries in the region have yet to recover, with global polarization and stalled public policies impacting quality of life.

How Years of Government Failures Caused a Flood ‘Worse Than Boko Haram’
27 Oct 2024  |  www.nytimes.com  |  English  |  Climate Change
A catastrophic flood in Maiduguri, Nigeria, caused by the collapse of the Alau dam, has been attributed to years of government negligence and mismanagement. Despite repeated warnings from engineers and local residents about the dam's deteriorating condition, officials failed to take corrective action. The disaster resulted in significant loss of life and displacement, with up to 1,000 people killed and nearly half a million displaced. The flood has exacerbated existing challenges in the region, including food and water shortages, and has drawn attention to the need for urgent maintenance of over 300 other dams in Nigeria. The Nigerian government has faced criticism for its handling of the situation, with promises of future action to prevent similar disasters.

Deforestation Hits Rural Zimbabweans with Wood Shortage
01 Nov 2024  |  ipsnoticias.net  |  Spanish  |  Rural Life
Rural communities in Zimbabwe, such as those in Chimanimani, face severe wood shortages due to deforestation, which is exacerbated by the reliance on wood for energy. The Zimbabwe Forestry Commission reports significant annual deforestation rates, while the United Nations Development Programme highlights the heavy dependence on wood for cooking and heating. Despite laws against tree cutting, villagers like Linet Makwera struggle to find wood, resorting to illegal means or purchasing from sellers like Tigere Mhike. Environmental experts, including Batanai Mutasa, advocate for alternative energy solutions like tsotso stoves and biogas to alleviate the crisis. However, economic challenges, including high unemployment, limit access to these alternatives.

More than half of Angolan women victims of violence do not report their aggressors
27 Nov 2024  |  www.voaportugues.com  |  Portuguese  |  Gender-Based Violence
In Angola, a significant majority of women who experience violence do not report it, with only 26% seeking police help. Factors such as poverty, lack of education, and inadequate state response contribute to this silence. The Ministry of Justice and Human Rights, in collaboration with the UNDP, highlighted these issues at a recent seminar. Clarisse Kaputu, a member of the Parliamentary Women's Group, and social activist Laura Macedo emphasize the need for stronger institutions and criticize the police's inadequate response. Cultural and educational factors also play a role in the lack of reporting, as noted by social analyst Elson de Carvalho. A recent police operation, 'Basadi XV,' aimed to combat domestic violence in the Southern African Development Community region.
