In Ethiopia, a heated political tug-of-war sparks security fears
19 Oct 2020
|
Al Jazeera
|
English
| Ethnic and Political Tensions in Ethiopia
Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed is in a dispute with the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF), the former dominant party in Ethiopia's politics. The House of Federation (HoF), controlled by Abiy's allies, voted to withhold budget subsidies from the Tigray region after Tigray held an election against the federal government's decision to postpone it due to COVID-19. The TPLF, which had split from the Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF) in 2019, won the election. The HoF declared the election void, and tensions have escalated, raising concerns of a potential security crisis. Both sides are accused of brinkmanship, and there are calls for national dialogue to resolve the crisis, though terms for such dialogue are contentious.

Don’t let the Islamic State connection overshadow the local factors that fed into the attack

The article discusses the Easter Sunday bombings in Sri Lanka, cautioning against hastily attributing the attacks solely to international terrorist groups like the Islamic State (IS) or Al-Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS). It highlights the local factors and historical context of terrorism in Sri Lanka, including the civil war and the use of suicide bombings by the LTTE. The article examines the delayed claim of responsibility by IS and considers the possibility of AQIS involvement, given intelligence chatter picked up by Indian and Bangladeshi agencies. It also explores the local political and criminal elements that may have contributed to the attacks, including the inaction of Sri Lankan security agencies despite forewarnings, and the political rivalry between Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and President Maithripala Sirisena. The article suggests that local factors and political undercurrents played a significant role in the bombings, which could signal a new era of jihadist violence in South Asia.

Colombia’s ‘false positives’ scandal: Victims accuse Montoya of mockery

In Colombia, families of victims in the 'false positives' scandal, where the army killed civilians and presented them as enemy combatants, have accused former army chief Mario Montoya of withholding information during a peace tribunal hearing. Montoya was expected to provide new details about the scandal, which resulted in at least 2,248 civilian deaths. Rights groups and victims' families are seeking accountability and believe Montoya's testimony is crucial to understanding the extent of the military's crimes and the involvement of higher command levels, including former President Santos and Senator Uribe. Montoya initially remained silent but later provided vague answers and blamed the soldiers' poor backgrounds for the crimes. Victims' rights groups are urging the court to take action against Montoya's perceived delay tactics. The Special Peace Jurisdiction (JEP) is considering expelling Montoya from the tribunal or initiating a judicial procedure that could lead to a 20-year prison sentence.

Armenia's Controversial Transition to a Parliamentary System
10 Apr 2023

| Armenian political opposition
Armenia is transitioning to a parliamentary system, concluding with the election of a new prime minister. Critics argue this move is designed to extend former President Serzh Sargsyan's power. Armen Sarkissian has been sworn in as president, a largely ceremonial role, while Sargsyan is expected to be elected as prime minister by the ruling Republican Party of Armenia and its coalition partner, the Armenian Revolutionary Federation. The opposition disputes the legitimacy of the constitutional amendment that facilitated this transition, citing a rigged referendum. The Tsarukyan bloc, led by Gagik Tsarukyan, is not opposing Sargsyan, while the Yelk bloc is divided, with only the Civil Contract party willing to protest. Lena Nazaryan of the Civil Contract party criticizes the current system as being too centralized around Sargsyan, leading to economic monopolies and a politicized justice system. Republican Party deputy chairman Armen Ashotyan defends the transition as democratic, and political scientist Hrant Mikaelian sees the public as resigned and skeptical of both the authorities and the opposition.
