Mass firings hamstring federal land agencies and wildfire response
21 Feb 2025  |  the Guardian  |  English  |  Climate Crisis
Federal agencies responsible for managing public lands and responding to wildfires are in disarray following mass firings by the Trump administration, which dismissed thousands of federal workers. The cuts, affecting the United States Forest Service and other agencies, are expected to hinder efforts to combat wildfires and manage public lands, exacerbating the challenges posed by the climate crisis. The firings have sparked fears of privatization and have been criticized by unions and legislators, who argue that the reductions will have a detrimental impact on agency missions and public safety. The situation has created a culture of fear and uncertainty within the agencies, with concerns about the future of public land management and emergency response capabilities.

With fewer sanctions, Venezuela sets foot on Wall Street
27 Oct 2023  |  El País América  |  Spanish  |  Finance
The United States has eased some financial sanctions on Venezuela, allowing transactions related to the oil and gas sector for the next six months, lifting restrictions imposed since 2019. This change comes as Western countries seek alternative oil sources due to the Russian military offensive in Ukraine and as Venezuela prepares for elections next year. The easing of sanctions has led to increased interest in Venezuelan oil and the possibility of boosting oil production, which could have significant economic implications for the country facing a humanitarian crisis. Wall Street anticipates that increased oil production could revitalize Venezuela's economy, despite the country's reduced capacity to extract and produce crude oil. The American company Chevron is expected to play a major role in the increase of oil production. The future of Venezuela's return to the global market and debt restructuring remains uncertain and is seen as a political bet.

The article discusses the balance between the right to honor and freedom of expression, referencing Salvadoran and international legal principles. US Urges Arab Allies to Help Stop Funding for Hamas
26 Oct 2023  |  www.zeriamerikes.com  |  Albanian  |  Middle East Conflict
The United States has called on Middle Eastern allies during an emergency session of the Terrorist Financing Targeting Center (TFTC) to increase efforts to interrupt international funding for Hamas, the organization responsible for the massive attack on Israeli civilians on October 7. The US Treasury Department urged TFTC member countries to use their influence to further halt funds for Hamas, which controls the Gaza Strip. The US has classified Hamas as a terrorist organization since 1997. A recent meeting was moved up due to the crisis in Israel and Gaza, and new sanctions against Hamas were announced by the US Treasury. International efforts to target Hamas' funding sources have waned over the years, but the events of October 7 have demonstrated the ongoing threat posed by Hamas, leading to a renewed focus on cutting off its financial support. The Republican-led Oversight Commission in the House of Representatives has also sent a letter to the Biden administration urging USAID to ensure that humanitarian aid for the people of Gaza does not end up supporting Hamas or other terrorist groups.

Stopping the expansion: The US imposes sanctions on companies linked to the Wagner Group in the CAR and UAE
29 Jun 2023  |  euronews  |  Russian  |  Conflict
The United States has imposed sanctions on four companies and one individual associated with the Russian Wagner Group and its founder Evgeny Prigozhin, operating in the Central African Republic, United Arab Emirates, Russia, and Mali. The Wagner Group, known for its presence in Eastern Ukraine, is involved in conflicts worldwide, particularly in Africa and Syria. The sanctioned entities are believed to play a key role in creating financial structures for the Wagner Group, including illegal diamond and gold trade. The Wagner Group has also been moving operations to Belarus after President Alexander Lukashenko allegedly helped Putin and Prigozhin negotiate an end to a recent rebellion. The Russian Internet Research Agency, funded by Prigozhin, is often cited as a key source of Russian disinformation. The Wagner Group continues to play a significant role in the ongoing war in Mali and has been active in influencing African elections through a network of companies linked to Prigozhin's Concord group.

Under the guise of shrine reconstruction, warmongering in Iraq and Syria
19 Apr 2022  |  ایندیپندنت فارسی  |  Persian  |  Economic Sanctions
The Reconstruction Headquarters of Holy Shrines, linked to Iran's Quds Force, claims increased financial contributions for shrine construction in Shia Imam shrines over the past two years. However, due to a lack of transparency and financial reporting, it is suspected that these funds are being used for activities beyond the stated religious purposes, potentially supporting the Quds Force's operations in Iraq and Syria. Former U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin had previously accused Iran of prioritizing funding for terrorist groups over its people's needs, leading to U.S. sanctions against the Reconstruction Headquarters. The organization, while claiming to rely solely on public donations, has received government funds, contradicting its statements. The U.S. has linked the Reconstruction Headquarters to financial support for the Quds Force and military personnel transfers, suggesting a broader mission for the organization in the region.

Why is there talk of a new easing of oil sanctions on Pdvsa?
06 Sept 2023  |  efectococuyo.com  |  Spanish  |  Energy Policy
The Italian oil company Eni's recent shipment of naphtha to Venezuela's Cardón port marks the first fuel delivery from Europe since sanctions were imposed on Petróleos de Venezuela (Pdvsa) in early 2019. This development is seen by some economic analysts as part of a new phase in negotiations to ease oil sanctions. European oil companies Eni and Repsol have been granted permission by the United States to export naphtha to Venezuela to alleviate gasoline shortages. The details of the agreement are not fully known, but there has been a change in the permissions granted to these companies. The shipment allows Pdvsa to return to its old model of exchanging oil for fuel. Eni and Repsol, along with other European companies like Shell and Maurel & Prom, are part of a lobby seeking similar permissions to resume crude production and export natural gas to the European Union. Trinidad and Tobago received a special license to negotiate with Pdvsa, leveraging their infrastructure to process and export Venezuelan natural gas to Europe. Pdvsa's president, Pedro Tellechea, stated in a Bloomberg interview that negotiations with European oil companies are well advanced, with Eni and Repsol interested in expanding their gas operations in Venezuela.

Moldova, heavily reliant on Russian gas, faced a 30% cut in October 2022, deepening to 40% by November. The crisis has political implications, with opposition parties linked to Russia organizing protests against the pro-European Union government of President Maia Sandu. Washington Expands Budget for Health Insurance for Undocumented Immigrants
14 Mar 2024  |  Hecho en California con Marcos Gutierrez - "Más que una programación, un movimiento"  |  Spanish  |  Immigration
Washington state legislators have allocated additional funds to reduce health insurance costs for undocumented immigrants as the state prepares to expand Apple Health, a free or low-cost health insurance, to this population in July. The Legislature added $28.4 million, nearly double the initial allocation, to assist the 16,000 applicants from the recent enrollment period. Washington was the first state to apply for a waiver to allow undocumented immigrants to purchase private health insurance, which was approved by U.S. federal departments. The state can only use its own funds to subsidize healthcare costs for undocumented immigrants, offering up to $250 in monthly discounts through Healthplanfinder. The average monthly cost after discounts is $210. Advocates like Catalina Velásquez and Representative My-Linh Thai emphasize the importance of making these programs permanent to ensure continued access to healthcare for low-income immigrants.

Sanctions against HAMAS investors unlikely to shake group's funding
02 Nov 2023  |  ru.euronews.com  |  Russian  |  Terrorism Financing
The US Treasury Department has imposed sanctions on key figures and financial networks associated with HAMAS following an attack on Israel on October 7. These sanctions target the external financing of the Palestinian group, including its secret investment portfolio, which is primarily held by HAMAS supporters in the Arab world. Despite these efforts, Jonathan Schanzer, a former financial analyst for terrorism at the US Treasury and now a senior vice president at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, believes these sanctions are unlikely to significantly harm HAMAS's financial resources, which include substantial funding from foreign governments like Iran and Qatar. HAMAS also receives funds through cryptocurrencies, with over $40 million in transactions linked to the group between 2020 and 2023. Turkey, a NATO member, does not consider HAMAS a terrorist organization and allows its activities within its borders. The US has also targeted HAMAS's financial intermediaries in countries like Iran, Qatar, Sudan, and Algeria. The Holy Land Foundation in the US was shut down for funding HAMAS, while Interpal in the UK was cleared by the High Court of allegations of supporting HAMAS.
